My SIL and her daughter are about to relocate to western NC when they get a divorce finalized.
I LOVE that area myself. Blue Ridge Mountains. LOTS of time camping there.
I'm pretty crazy about S&W revolvers, too. And Shields and Third-Gens. I like Colts ok but the Python never appealed to me. I like my 686. I've never indulged in large pistol calibers, though. I'm on a tight budget and shoot common stuff to save some dough.

When you were a LEO, did you arrest people or talk them into submission? 
Good story, makes me wonder what county you worked for. I've lived along the NC foothills almost all my 70 years, in Surry, Wilkes, Burke and Catawba Counties. I was a NC DOC Corrections Officer while living in Burke County (1978-1983), I worked at what was known as the "High Rise", which was demolished in the early 2000's. I wanted to correct yopu in one small area of your conversation. NC DOC issued M65's, not M67's when I worked for them but we did use .38 Spl. ammo. We had our own pistol range and held PPC matches for both LE and the public.

It was a tiny place that with no disrespect to them, I'd feel safe calling a "hole in the wall" place. Dixie Ammo Dump in Hoschton. Great deal and great service.
My in-laws live between Gainesville and Athens. I know two of the shops in Gainesville-the two next to each other on J Morrow Pkway. I've bought from the bigger one several times (never guns though). My FIL knows one of the employees there having hired him and worked with him years ago at another employer.
In Athens I always hit Clyde Armory and Franklins.
And I LOVE Rabun County! I'd heard of it but never really went through there until about 10 years ago (we always took I85 to Commerce, but about 10 years ago decided to take a slightly longer but FAR more relaxing route through Asheville, Waynesville, and Dillsboro, then take 23/441 from there all the way to her dad's house). It easily the prettiest of GA's 159 counties IMHO.

I enjoyed the long post. I got my Model 29 with 8-3/8ths" inch barrel in 1989 or so. I carried it concealed (Ha! Oh yes I did!) in a Bianchi x-15 shoulder holster under a sport coat for years in GA and then again when I got my CHL here in NC in the 90's.
I loaded it with 210 grain silvertips.
I shot at a deer at 80 yards six times and missed all six and my hearing has never been right since
There is a learning curve with this gun. Forgive me if you know this, but do not let the wrist articulate during recoil, but rather the elbow.
Even Dirty Harry shot specials in his. Fine but I will tell you that the shorter rounds will score the chambers and deposit carbon in the chambers right at the very spot where the longer magnum cases expand. I practiced and practiced with 44 specials and then at the end of the range session loaded up the magnums. When it came time to reload, I tilted the gun and brought the web of my hand down hard and quick on the extraction rod and pierced a painful hole in my hand! Owwwww! This did NOT extract the cases! It felt the same as if I had slammed my hand down on a desk paper spike. Well, maybe the desk spike would have gone clean through because it is pointy and maybe would hurt less.
Please use downloaded magnum cases if you must shoot weaker practice rounds.
I have also learned a technique to get the revolver cylinder sparkling clean using a product called Iosso bore cleaner and a 3/8ths inch drill.
When my son turned 21 the best man gift I could give him was that revolver and he still has it.
I hope you do not make the mistake I made.
