Is $580 a fair price for a nice 28-2 four inch Highway Patrol?

It has a little muzzle wear, pachmyr grips, and the lockup is very tight.

I currently have it on hold and have until Monday to buy it.

I have wanted a .357 for years and this could be the one.

I'd love to get the community's thoughts.

Why the shouting Tin (capitols)? Buying a nice N frame for under $600 is a deal, period. At that price I would snatch it up, they are great shooters, what are you waiting for.

Well, since WE can't see what it looks like, it's kind of difficult to say. I'd say low ball them at $475 and see where it goes from there. Just be sure to have CASH in hand!

If thats what you want and have been wanting it for some time then don't hesitate to long.If I were to sell mine I would have to have close to 700 at least.Its all original and used to be a carry weapon for a friend of mine who used to be FBI and man could he shoot it well.I would still shoot for a lower price but be ready to buy otherwise.

I wouldn't sell either of my 28-2's for any less. My 6" 28-2 transitional, If I were to sell it....
(Its Recessed, NOT pinned) would have to be in the $8-900 range. Thats about what a new S&W revolver goes for around here. (except for the 642/637 type etc .38's)
The 4" model is a "DPS 24XXX" roll marked (Texas Dept/Public/Safety???) gun and is a "S" serial #. Much custom work has been done on/in it, and its trigger is SMOOTH.
Used to be the Model 28's were available for $150-300 bucks all day long. Only ones under $450 now days are junkers.
Just my humble opinion.

Actually Model 28-2's were way under priced up until about 2 years ago and their price has risen steadily since then and now 6 inch 28-2's sell all the time for between $500 and $600. The 4 inch commands a premium and I would say the price you are looking at is not out of the ball park.

I have a 6inch I paid $150.00(1977)&4inch paid $250 (1997). Glad I never sold either. What I'm saying thats was what they were worth when I got them. If offered $580 for either they would not be sold.

I got almost as lucky as Trea, bought both of my 28-2s in late 90s - early 2000s for just under $300 each.

And in 09 I picked up a 6" 90% condition 1955 Highway Patrolman for 350. I'd bet I could close to double that. Not for sale though, it's a birth year gun and actually in better shape than I am!

While the Grips are Pachmyr style, they are comfortable and fit my hand perfectly. I'll just keep them on there, and then get a set of nice wood grips just to have them.

The thing was a blast to shoot. My buddy, who knows guns inside out said it was well worth the money, and he was impressed with how smooth the trigger was. It may have had a trigger job, or maybe the gun is just that good from the factory.

I wanted an old school S&W .357 for years, and now I have one.

If I ever need to sell it, I know I'll get my money back.

The first five shots with the revolver were all in the black at 10 yards.

I am a Sig-Sauer guy, but this Smith is up at the top of my list now.

I couldn't be happier than I am now. I had a bug grin on my face shooting it.

You are right on, if you can afford it, buy it and enjoy it.

You only go around this thing once.

I paid $450 for my "S" serial number 28-2 about a year ago, and saw one in lesser condition go for $600 a couple months later.

There's just nothing that shoots quite like a big S&W N frame revolver. Enjoy that one, you'll never regret getting it.

I've been known to be a "fence-sitter" and have lost out on a few nice ones.

Buying a gun with pachys is an excuse to put a set of Kurac's on it. Look in the WTS section for them. Very functional, good looking, they work great for my hands and grip.

For slightly more than S&W Trarget stocks these days you could buy a set of Kurac grips for your N frame .

His Maple Grips on a 25-2 with 6 inch barrel that I recently moved to a 28-2 4 inch revolver and they are shaped like S&W coke grips.

Tom,those rubber grips from some companies tend to cause a little problem underneath. on blued frames... I have seen the results, though to be clear, I did not see how well the grip frame was oiled, or protected before the rubbers were installed. If you like the feel while shooting, that is great, I do as well, but,it will not hurt to remove and check the the grip frame for rust. Glad you got something you have wanted for a long time.....Regards

Thank you for the tip. I unscrewed the grips and got them off easy enough. The Back-Strap and Front-Strap on the frame looked like the held up without any rust or pitting.
