Is $600 fair for a VG condition 5" Model 27-2 w/o Box or Papers?

There's a 5" Model 27-2 I've been thinking of picking up out here. The bluing is in great shape, with no carry wear, rust, or pitting. It looks like it's a bit gummy, with congealed oil on the hammer and extractor star, as if it'd been sitting for 20+ years. Clean bore and chambers. Comes with TH & TT, but standard magnas...so I'm assuming the grips aren't original, but I'm gonna have the dealer pull 'em so I can see. No nox or papers.

It'd end up being about $600 OTD...does this sound like a fair price? I've been wanting a Model 27 for a while now, and I've heard 5" was a real winner.

Appreciate any input you guys could give, on the price and any opinions on the 5" Model 27.

Thanks,
-Rob

From the description, it sounds better than VG and is at a good price. It may very well have shipped with Magna stocks; I had an 8 3/8" version of the same model with numbered Magnas, and they were more common in the 3.5 and 5" barrels. The 5" are nice shooters, very well-balanced.

Robinett ........... based on your description of the 27-2, $600. sounds like a very good price. As of late, the average price for M27's range around $1,000. in So Cal, in good to very good condition. It's a very nice handling revolver, and the "bright blue" finish on the 27's was the factories highest quality bluing ever. It's by far, one of my favorite S&W's, and if I were you, I'd jump at the opportunity to buy it "right now" before it gets away! Remember: when you snooze ....you lose!

Really? You actually had to ask................

condition

The term "Very Good Condition" implies to us that the revolver has been degraded through use and, perhaps, minor modifications (Goodyear Grips?) from its original NIB status. A 5" 27-2 in VG would be worth somewhere right around $400. What you describe is a M-27 in EXCELLENT Condition and it is worth right around the $600 asked.

If I could find one like that around here for that price, I'd gladly engage the wife in the quarrel that would inevitably follow (only because I already bought a gun this summer.)

Thanks for all the input, guys. I'm gonna go back to see if it's still there (fingers crossed!) as soon as the shop opens today. I'll post the results tonight.

Unless something is wrong that you didnt catch, thats a good price. I bought mine brand new around 1971 and it came with no extras and the standard magna grips. I sent it back right away and got all the bells and whistles.

Hey, guys. Just picked up the Model 27...it was still there! :D It was in as good as shape as I had remembered. I pulled the grips and did a full checkout on it, too. There's no number on the grips, but they fit perfectly. The timing, lockup & B/C gap is perfect. The gun is definitely gummy though and will benefit greatly from a thorough cleaning. No rust or notable wear that I can see right away either.

I just snapped these photos real quick from my cell phone, so bear with me on the lousy quality. I'll be sure to post better ones tonight. After tax and 10% military discount, it came out to $590. I didn't mind paying that too terribly ;)

Thanks again for your input, guys.

I agree with most. If you are looking at it yourself and give it a very good---the 600 is not a bad price especially if you really want one of those. Coming across nice 27's is not as common as it once was. 5 inch bbl is desirable to boot!. If you are looking at it over an auction---then your are taking the word of the dealer. A smart dealer does not over state condition as that results in a complaint and a desire to return which is a hassle for a dealer and they do not want hassle. Call dealer on phone and have a chat--you can tell a lot about a person and his ability and credibilty on a phoncon. Years ago I bought a SW from a guy who always has his Smith's marked WAY to high---but I wanted it---a 4" 629 first edition for $600! I thought that was 100 or 150 to high---but I wanted it and you see them rarely. I have not regretted it. Good luck.

OH---Pictures just came through---that is a dandy---u won't regret it. I wish SW had checkered the top straps of 29's.

SGhead, a 27-2 is a three screw. I have one very much like this one, only with the target grips and the standard hammer and trigger. Gave 650 for it a couple months ago. Nice find!

LOL...sounds like yours tricked you into the same thing mine did...no more purchases this year...still working within the trade loop hole though :D

If I came across a.deal like that, though, I think I could negotiate something with her. She's really a great sport!

Hey Rob, looks like a good find! Nicely done. At the WAC show this past weekend I eyeballed a 6" 27-2 in really good shape for $580 and probably could have haggled down a bit. It had Goodyears installed, and no box/papers; otherwise I might have considered it a bit more. But the 6" is way more common than the 5". Your deal wins, hands down!

Very nice catch. Rarely do I see 5" 27-2s in my area with target hammers and triggers?
Steve
