Is it a HE or Regulation Police?

Yesterday I purchased a revolver listed as 32 Long-Revolver SN-353724 at an on-line auction. To my thinking the serial number would show it to be a HE model 1903 third model. After further checking, I’m thinking it may be a Regulation Police. It appears to be in fine condition with no rust and very little pitting.

It has a small S&W trade mark logo on the left, no Made in USA line at all, half penny front sight and standard rear. It appears to have a rebated square butt with serial number on the front grip. It shows Smith & Wesson on the left side of the barrel and as far as I can tell from the pictures, nothing on the right side. It has a smooth trigger, five screw and appears to be a 4 1/4 inch barrel. The stocks have no medallion and the extractor rod is mushroom or barrel type.

I won’t be able to provide pictures until I receive it as the on-line pictures show an auction tag. My questions are: Is this a 32 HE or a Regulation Police and roughly what year? Are there any other descriptions that would help you decide? Is there much difference in the desirability or collect-ability between the two? I bought it to keep and use as an occasional shooter. I have been researching these in your past posts and you have convinced me to try out a 32. This will be my first I frame.

Since you say that you purchased the gun at the auction, that means the auction is over and you can post from it whatever you like.

Now that I enlarged the pictures, I saw the cartridge description is on the right side of the barrel. Do you agree it appears to be unmolested and in pretty good condition>

With the patent date on the butt and serial number on the front grip frame, its definitely a Regulation Police.
I suspect Guy is right on his estimate of 1921. Appears to be in good shape, and I bet some TLC will make it look even better.
Congrats!!

P.S. - The .32 RP's were not marked as such on the barrel....only the .38 S&W versions.

Thanks for the info guys. Hope they don't take too long to ship it. I'll post more after I clean it up.

Congrats on finding a very nice older .32 Regulation Police.

For reference and perspective, here's a not-as-nice-as-yours .32 Hand Ejector (round butt) that shipped in November 1929. Unlike yours, the serial number is stamped on the butt. Yours appears to have the same 3¼" barrel. You'll note the extractor rod knob is different on the two, and mine has the one-line "MADE IN U.S.A."

Enjoy yours. They're great shooters.

Both my 1917 and 1920 38 S&W vintage Regulation Police guns are marked as such on the right side of the bbl. What year did they quit marking them as Regulation Police? Big Larry

Got it in, stripped down & cleaned. Surprised to see it possibly hasn't been fired. What do you think?
