This coating is called Titanium Nitride... I got mine done at www.titaiumgun.com they were cheap and really really fast about a week I think.. check them out.

my vote would be for titanium nitride plating. I think this is what IMI uses on their "gold" desert eagles.
I would guess if you were to plate the entire revolver, you would have to buff out the chambers and the barrel to maintain the correct bore sizes.

Here's a Colt that was gold-plated about the turn of last century down in Mexico and then engraved. Traces of the gold remain.
BBQ anyone? Western pimp: a Stetson, beaver coat, tooled gun belt.
PS: Grips are ivory and eyes are rubies.

Many metals require that the piece be copper plated first, IIRC.
