I was in line for breakfast at a local fast food chain. The man in front of me placed his order, and the cashier gave him his total. He said that is not correct, she then double checked. The man then got loud, and pointed at a sign and demanded that meal at that price. The cashier politely explained that sale was over yesterday as the manager was changing the sign. Then the man got louder giving this lady a hard time, all this over $0.17. I then got some change from my pocket place it on the counter, this didn't help the situation. The man turns his attention to me telling me it's not my business and to stay out of it. I told him, it's my business you are holding me up for $0.17 and being a horses back side, and you need to move on with your day. So, he got his meal, checked his gold watch, and got in his Lexus and speeds away.

The cashier thanked me. Then she told me she didn't have a dollar in her pocket, and people with money grippe about $0.17. Maybe I stepped out of place, but it just chaps my behind that this man from a different state comes here and has to be a jerk. Here we treat people with a little more respect than what you might find in the big city.

I can tell you back when I was 19 I worked in a big resort restaurant in Lake George and it was not uncommon to hear the wait staff complain about getting tips that were not even close to what the percentage should be. These were usually the folks driving the nicer cars and seemed a bit more flush. I hear it alot now from some folks I know that work at the diner here in town, the out of towners complain about the littlest things, the prices and then tip next to nothing while the locals who I can tell you have a lot less seem to be more generous. Personally I know of one place that has a sign up now that says "Welcolm to the Adirondacks now go home" simply because the downstate folks are so rude. I have been in a few places before and have been held up by some downstater asking stupid questions like are there bears up here and why are prices so high. I remember when I worked at a gas station in Lake George I would get the dumbest folks and the rudest all from the city. My boss and I had an understanding, I would work there if i could speak my mind when they got out of line. I tossed more than a few. I could never deal with whiners about the prices, since I had no say in them and I would give them a phone number to call, which turned out to be one for an impotence help line. I never said I was a good boy.

Howdy

Howdy,
Do I detect a little class envy? It would be no surprise with news outlets reporting 24 hours a day that the rich don't hold up their end of the burden.
I don't want to get political, I'm just saying I don't resent anyone wanting a meal at an advertised price regardless of what he drives or what kind of watch he wears.
They should take the sign down so folks don't expect the sale price.
The rich are not the enemy, it's just a distraction folks.
Thanks
Mike

In our town as of a few years ago, I couldnt belive it to find the average wage for a waitress here in cedar city utah is $2.13 + tips! That includes the top chain resturants here!

Huh?!?! I'm not envious of anyone in any class - envy is one of the Seven Deadly Sins! There's a big difference however between envy and a total disrespect for true jerks!

I can agree with that...to a point. BUT to get all worked up, rude, hostile, and give grief to everyone around you for 17 cents? I think that points less to frugality and more to anger issues.

It never fails for me...I am in the express line at the supermarket, obeying the 20 items or less sign, while the person if front of me checks out 100 or more items (why don't the stores enforce their own rules?) and then of course they want to argue over a 10 cent coupon that is either expired or isn't the right coupon...I have many times wanted to offer them 10 cents (or more) just to get them to shut up and move along.

I think that many people today feel so angry, frustrated, and powerless over most of their lives, that they will erupt over something so trivial because they think that it is at least SOMETHING they can "win" ... regardless of whether it is worth winning or not. Is it even a win if you act like a jerk in so doing?

WOW! Is that what you got from that? I have 2 houses and 2 paid for trucks, and I don't wear a watch. The only debt I have are the 2 houses. Jealous? I think not! I live a simple life.

I guess where you come from the customer is always right, and it's ok to be rude to get your way.

I visited Gatlinburg Tn. a while back and it's a great tourist town. I went up to a street vendor to buy a 20oz. coke. She said that's $3 (I think) I said man that's some high priced coke. She replied welcome to Gatlinburg with a smile. I smiled back gave her the money and enjoyed my coke. I didn't get mad, or try to bargin a cheaper price. I could have took my business else where, but it wasn't necessary.

The point is you don't have to business there. If you can't except the price go elsewhere. There was no need to be loud with that lady.

Rich Hall had a sniglet for those people. They are known as "expressholes".

I agree the guy should have handled the situation differently, but I too get very annoyed when charged more than the advertised price for something. This happens a lot at McDonald's in particular. It isn't the money; usually only a few cents, it's the fact I've been intentionally misled.

feral. I am disgusted with the wages that waiters/waitress get. My mother was a waitress for many years and remember her coming home counting tips, and wondering how to get the bills paid. I do try to be very fair with the tip I leave. I have even matched the tip 100% to the bill once. What does bother me is when the server does the disappearing act, someone else brings the food, no refills on my drink, and then the original server shows back up with the check. No thank you, have a good day, or can I get you anything else?.

I realize everyone has a bad day, and I can usually pick up on that, and over look it. There are a lot of people that are horrible tippers. As crappy as this may sound I won't always leave a tip, bad service = bad tip.

No class envy from me. This guy apparently has none anyway.

In theory, I have no problem with expecting to receive a meal (or anything else) at the advertised/posted price. In reality, there's just no sense in acting like a cretin, pitching a fit, berating a lowly paid employee who has no power to change the situation, and create a scene that causes more delays for others in line for SEVENTEEN CENTS.

All sense without common sense is nonsense.

Wanna talk rude?? Eddie W, the gundealer from "upstate" is the rudest person I ever nearly met. Made an appt to come see his goods. It was a 2 hour drive, but I heard about the stuff he had, and thought it was worth the drive.
When we get there after looking around for a good half hour because no one has a number anywhere near their house, my friend gets out of the car and walks down the driveway(we thought it might be his) to see if this was the house or maybe the owner knew where Eddie was. We're both calling out "Eddie, Eddie", until this bald headed dude comes out and walks from his house to his garage. John asks him "are you Eddie W", and the guy says yes I am. John says we have an appt with you and we'd like to see your stuff. Good ol' country boy Eddie says "I'm busy, sorry" and walks away, just like that............WHAT??? We drove 2 hours to get here and the best answer you have is "I'm busy"?. THAT'S a rude person, and he doesn't come from the city either.

I don't know

Hi J,
What I got out of this is that the Lexus and watch somehow had something to do with this guys being a jerk.
I don't see where it has anything to do with it and I don't know why anyone would insert these things in the way you did if not to infer that it matters some how.
I feel that I am told the so called rich are to be resented everyday on the news.
I don't think so, but I see it starting to stick elsewhere and just wonder if maybe they have gotten to you?
I'm not trying to be a dope or make trouble. I'm just pointing out what I see and I wonder, does it matter that he had a nice car and watch? Would it have been better had it been a poor person pointing out the place advertised a meal for so much but was charging more?
Anyway, no hard feelings I just think a being jerk is the way a fellow behaves, not what he drives.
Thanks
Mike
