Actually it's a bit worse than the rosy picture you painted. When you work as a waiter/waitress the federal govt also gets to assume that you under-report your earnings, so the food bills you sell your customers are taxed at 8%. Your paycheck (the $2.13/hr) gets the 8% taken out of it each pay period. Some diners don't even leave a tip of 8% when that happens the waiter gts the extra money taken from his paycheck anyway, not that it'll help the deficit either way

I's in that place one time...This lit'l smart *** in front of me was givin the gal behind the counter some un-warranted grief.

I stepped up close and whispered to him, "Hey pard, that's my daughter your rantin on here."

He took a look in my eye and left.

The young lady asked what I said to the guy.
I sez to her, "I told him, he was jest so purty when he was mad!"

You should NEVER create a scene like that. Something similar (not exact, but similar) happened to me. I smiled at the poor girl behind the counter (who looked like she was twelve) paid what her register told her and didn't hold up the people in line behind me. The little girl doesn't have any authority - she's making minimum wage.

The company has an 800 number. I called, got a recording, left a message, and figured that was the end of it. Wrong. I got a call back, an apology, and a week later two gift cards for 5 times the amount of the amount I questioned.

I worked customer service for over 30 years. There's a right way to complain about an issue, and a wrong way. The guy OP spoke about definitely chose the wrong way. Doesn't matter if it was 17 cents or 17 dollars.

Entirely different situation, $.17 per gallon times 18 gallons is a big deal and I would complain. That's a big difference from $.17 period.

It's not about the "advertised price", the watch or the Lexus. And it's not about "yankees" or the super rich.

It is about MANNERS and conducting yourself as a civilzed human being. It's about courtsey and setting the example. There were probably children watching this tirad and will follow that example of no respect for another person and no personal integrity.

The reasons for acting rude are a laundry list of what these people are taught growing up.

Funny thing... Most of the truly rich people I know or have met are really nice people. My experience has been that the ones that don't really have a lot of wealth, but act like they do, are the ones that are so offensive.

Actually, it's 17 cents difference in price per gallon, not 19... but whose counting pennies anyway? :D

Is it a different? By what standard? The way I look at it, 17 pennies X 18gal is mere chump change and no big deal at all. See how this works? Once we start rationalizing that it's ok if the product is advertised at one price but charged at higher price as long as it's only (xyz), then there is no standard and we lapse into relativism.

Now I agree that the customer handled it improperly, but the root of the problem is a business/employee that thinks they should be able to advertise one price, charge more, and then make excuses when brought to their attention rather than honoring the advertised price. Bad business, and a very valid reason for consumer complaint regardless of actual dollar amount.

Wow what a difference of opinion we have here.

As I see it the Manager was in the process of changing the signs. This place is 24 hrs a day so there is no making the change before opening.

At places like this the signs in question come on the truck in a box. Then the corp. office sends e-mails to managers telling them what to do and when to do it. So the manager may have just got the word to make the change.

If it helps the man wasn't a yankee:D I would say he was not born in this county. Also he was wearing what I would call "golf" attire, a gold watch, gold rings, had a pile of cash in his hand, and drove a Lexus.

I just didn't think it was necessary for him to act that way being loud, and making the lady feel that he is in someway better than she is.

What's so funny about this thread is the New York Yankees are scrappin' with each other about which ones are more rude.

I'm with you Jimmy (as a long time Florida born and raised former resident) - "They's all Yankees!" :D
 
Those empathizing with the .17 custommer have obviously not worked behind that counter. The watch and car have everything to do with it. If that man ever worked a service job, he's forgotten or is in denial. He's lucky he didn't get cross with me back when I was working those jobs. I'd of hit him and then found another crappy job.
 
When I go into a business where the employees earn minimum wage, I expect these kind of problems. I don't get mad. Ain't worth the time or effort to get mad.

And in the end I mind my own business. I don't bring attention to myself. I'm getting too old to stand and argue or duke it out with someone.

I consider the source and get on with the rest of my day.

Now tell me the truth. Did this guy's wealth have anymore to do with him being a jerk than the kind of underwear he had on.
Maybe he was one of those "Tighty whitey" wearing fellows.
We all know how they are.
No doubt this fellow was a jerk if he did these things. He probably would have been a jerk had he ridden the bus in.
You all resent the rich if you want to. For what ever reason, it is what the news media wishes.
I just don't see what he owns makes him any better or worse of a person.
I'm going back under my tinfoil hat and wait for warm weather so I can shed these boxers, they make me testy.

At our dealership, you get a punchcard. With every oil change, you get a punch. After five punches, your next one is free. A customer came in for an oil change. She was charged, but then it was voided because she had a punch card. The book keeper (the owner's sister) inadvertently sent a bill. The customer came in ranting and raving and threatened to shove the bill up the book keepers dark posterior place. There is now a sign in the service department with the customer's name on it (and her poor husband's) that says "absolutely no service". The next nearest dealership is 75 miles away. One of the downfall of living in South Dakota. Hope this customer doesn't need any warranty work. The toes you step on today may be attachted to the butt you have to kiss tomorrow. Tread lightly!
