Is the M-19 Frame Actually Different?

The very last sentence in the description of the Model 19 in the SCSW (page 185) states "The Model 19 is built on a frame that is slightly larger than a standard K frame in the yoke area."

Just where does the dimension differ? I have measured and compared from every imaginable direction and surface the frame of my M19-2 with my three other K-Frames (a mid-30s K22 Outdoorsman, an M&P from the same period, and an S-prefix transitional M&P) and find them all the same.

What am I missing? Or, is that an error in the SCSW?

There's no error - the frame of the Model 19 has a slightly extended flat at the front of the frame/crane area to mate up with the ejector rod shroud. Guns with an unshrouded ejector rod such as the Models 10, 14, 15 do not have this flat. See this post for a visual comparison: http://smith-wessonforum.com/s-w-re...-model-14s-ever-made-357-a.html#post137783684

The Model 19 frame is no thicker or otherwise modified for strength, it is purely for cosmetics. Otherwise there would be a gap between the front of the frame and the ejector rod shroud. The Model 53 (.22 Remington Jet caliber) is the same.

For what it's worth I saw what appeared to be a round butt Model 19 frame (which normally has a 2-1/2" barrel) with what looked like a 8-3/8" Model 14 barrel on it. There was a ugly mismatch to the frame at both the top and bottom of the barrel. Just because a barrel will screw into a given frame doesn't mean it will "fit".

*edit* - I see that Engine49guy beat me to it.

If you look under the barrel the 19 frame is slightly longer to accommodate the ejector rod shroud. . .
Thanks (both of you) very much. That was too obvious. I was looking for actual variations in frame dimensions, not variations in frame shapes. My error . . . but now I know .

I'm assuming that the M66 frame is this way as well?

Yes the Model 66 is a SS version of the Model 19 so it is the same,
The non shrouded ejector rod K Magnums are not like the Model 19 except for the 65 Ladysmith because it did have an ejector rod shroud.
The full underlug 14-5 , 15-5 , 17-6 and 617 on up also have the
longer yoke area as well.
