I don't believe "any" S&W revolvers are made with a square butt currently. Many cone with Sq butt to Rd Butt conversion grips that make it look and feel like a square butt.

I own 617's with and without Target riggers and Hammers. Personally, I'd be more concerned about the quality of the trigger than whether it has the two T's . IMHO, while these featurs look nice, they hav little to do with realized accuracy in most situations.

btw, I don't know the rules o the Huntsmans games refered too but you might check to see if they allow loading of 10 round at a time. Some games only allow 5 or 6 rounds loaded per course of fire ( to keep things safe and theplaying field level.). In that case , having a 10 round capacity can actually be a little harder to deal with as you need to index each load to the 1 oclock starting position.

I sent a note in which I asked about the maximum number of rounds that can be loaded into a revolver. Your note came at a good time because I want to buy a .22 revolver, so it is good to know the limit, thank you.

Target trigger historically referred to a wider trigger. Apparently on the modern 617 in question a target trigger would be considered the normal trigger. I guess "target trigger" sounds better than "standard trigger"

I think this is being overly thought out! You are looking at a factory new 617 10 shot revolver with an internal lock. The price appears to be good, it is listed as being new? I certainly would not buy a used 617-? for the same price as a new one unless collectible. I would buy it and do the usual checks for barrel alignment, finish flaws and to see if the trigger works. Then take it home and use it. Any problems will be a factory warranty as usual.

The reason I was over-thinking is because of the reference to the target features. I did not realize the 617 came with these, and now I understand that they make no difference.

When I find out about the maximum number of rounds that can be loaded, then I will be able to make a more informed decision.

You will not find a .500" full target trigger on a 617 with a 10 round cylinder unless it has been installed after it left the factory. The normally supplied is often referred to as the "combat" trigger, about 3/8" wide and smooth face. The lock on a 617 is a non-issue, my 617-6 has been going for year's. All 617's have been drilled and tapped.

I have a 617 no dash {4 inch}and it isn't drilled and tapped. I bought it new , back in the day.

My 6 shot {4 inch 617-0} is a square butt. doesn't help with the 10 shot, but the 617 was made with a square butt for a bit.

Calling a smooth/narrow trigger a "target" trigger & the narrower non spurred hammer a "target" hammer??? NOT in my day, but things change & what's in a name? My 4" 10-6 has (what I would call) NON TH/TT, BUT shoots "good". What IS important to me is how it shoots, and I'm not disappointed. I shoot in double action mode anyway so not having the TH & TT is a non issue. The lock I could do without, but just throw the key away & ignore it. So far so good.

Update with new information: The rapid fire consists of two 20 second strings of five shots with a reloading break between strings. So, I won't need a 10 shot revolver. I will be able to use a red-dot sight.

If it's rapid fire I wouldn't want a target trigger on my revolver. My 18-4 has 2T's it's fine for target but not for rapid fire. That wide serrated trigger can work on your trigger finger after firing a few stings in DA. YMMV

THE GOAL is what YOU want, NOT what WE like. Those older TT,TH's are beautifully smooth things. While not MY choice for double action rapid fire, a bullseye shooter might disagree strongly. IMO one size won't fit all.

I did not base this on what anyone likes, i gathered information, from those in this forum, who have much more experience that I have, an also evaluated the new information on how the event will be run, and then, with all of that data, decided that I don't need a 10 shot revolver. this is because there is a break between strings to reload. I agreed with those who have used the triggers and hammers.

Of course it is my decision. gather information and then decide. Is that not the better way to make an informed decision? Thank you for your advice, I know i tend to rely on the opinions of others,

In general, all K-22's are fantastic and you'll most likely be happy with whatever you decide on.

That may be true for 10 shot's, but I have a 617 6" THTT (no dash) 6 shot that is not drilled and tapped.
