Is this a 29 ND to 29-1 "transitional revolver"? I think/hope so……

I purchased this gun last week mainly because I thought it fit the description of a "transitional revolver" that was identified from a post on 5-1-2021, where member Breadman1 is trying to get a value on his 29 no dash.

As you can see from the thread link titled "Help me value my 29 no dash", Doc44 identifies Breadman1's 29 ND as a "transitional revolver" from 29 ND to 29-1. He goes on to say because it is a stamped 29 ND in the yoke cut but is configured as a Model 29-1 with an extractor rod with a left-hand thread. He identifies this after seeing close-up pictures of the knurled-up tip and specifically the area just behind it. Doc44 also identifies the serial number range as S219000-S22100.

Two years ago, I purchased that nickel 4" 29 ND "transitional" revolver from Breadman1 and have been on the lookout for another "transitional" revolver ever since.

This blue 6.5", 29 ND caught my eye last week. Even though the serial number, S231193 does not fall in that range listed above, the yoke cut is stamped 29 ND and it has what I believe to be a left-handed threaded extractor rod. I have taken some pictures and posted them here.

These seem to be rare, as Doc44 said in the referenced thread, there are only two reported, but he does say there are probably a few more to be discovered. Hopefully this 6.5" 29 ND is one of them. The serial number is S231193 and I believe it shipped in 1963.

I have also included a picture with both the 4" nickel and the 6.5" blue together showing the knurled tip part of the extractor rod. Let me know if you need anymore pictures.

Hopefully Doc44 or someone else can comment.

Let me know what you think.

I'm more of a K frame guy but typically when you see the groove cut behind the ejector rod knurling it indicates it's a left hand thread.

Your 44 Magnum with serial number S231193 (I assume) has a 3-screw frame and is a Model 29-2, not a transitional Model 29. The "transitional" revolver discussed in 2021 has a 4-screw frame. S231193 should have been stamped MOD. 29-2 in the yoke cut, but was not (sometimes this happens).

I owned a Model 29-2 in the same serial number range that was stamped MOD. 29-2 in the yoke cut, but had an extractor rod with a right-hand thread. It was shipped in early 1963.

Does S231193 have an L stamped on the rear of the cylinder? Just curious.

Looks like the guy with the stamp started off too far to the right and ran out of room for the -2.;)

Beyond that I think you have a beautiful, early 29-2 with excellent cokes.

Bill,

As always, thank you the information, you never disappoint to answer the question, with such a wealth of knowledge. Guess my hunt for second 29 ND to 29-1 "transitional revolver" continues and I will definitely pay attention to the serial number range. Luckily it is a great looking revolver and very minty. I have this weird thing about getting things in pairs. :D

Yes there is an "L" on the cylinder.

Gil...Your Model 29 [-2 :)] is an early one having shipped in January 1963. Some of the early 29-2s have an L stamped on the rear surface of the cylinder indicating an extractor rod and stem with an improved, left-hand thread. I have a Model 29-2, S231233, shipped in March 1963 that has an L stamped on the rear surface of the cylinder.
