is this a 5904?

I've had this for almost 20 years (ownership transferred to me in 1994), and just took it out of long term storage. a local gunsmith said he thought it was probably a 5904, but since it is a Performance Center model and the images online don't look like a 5904, wanted to see if any experts on this forum had insight?

Looks like a 6906 variant from the Performance Center.

Either a PC-9 or Shorty 9.

Feudist, thanks a lot for the prompt reply, really appreciated. RE: your question "is it for sale", it is not on the market because I am putting it into service as our HD (only gun we got . I'm not sure of the value (it has only about 200 rounds through it), but if I do sell it I will give you a shot at first offer since you were so helpful. regards.

Should be marked on the frame, but looks like a 6906 to me. That's my HD gun, too. Doesn't get much better.

That is a Shorty9 or PC9, often the boxes were marked "Shorty 5906" on the labels. It was a limited run and high-end gun in the $1,000 range when new. Shares the same features as the 6900 series as far as grips, mags, but should have the Briley barrel and bushing in it along with much nicer fit and finish.

That's a PC 6906..... PC Shorty 9 or PC-9 or____?____ , there is even a all stainless version with a 4 1/4 barrel the SD9. Can't tell from the picture does it have a single or double (left and right ) sided safety?

I've got 2..... one I can ID from the SCS&W the other "not so much"

I think there were several very limited runs of the 9mm as the .40 "Shorty Forty" was the hot gun at the time......

Mine has been my hi cap every day carry since about 1996.... though I generally carry a single stack 3913.

It's a sweet gun..... if you can have only one that one would be on my very short list........

Holsters , mag made for the 6906 will all fit. you can even use 15-17 rd 5906 mags though they will hang out about 1/2 inch ( I think a spacer is still available from S&W)

You got a winner there ...... enjoy.

PS an option might be to sell and buy a stock 6906 and a 5906 with the funds.....LOL

I'm going to say that is a 5906 PC-9. According to the Standard Catalog, the Shorty 9 and the 6906 Compact both had an ambidextrous safety.

ahoss... have to disagree that's a 6906 frame not a 59....... look at the "pinky rest" (LOL) on the mag.

I think it's part of a short run not listed in the SCS&W.

I've got one like it with Novack sights that I can't ID to any listed in the SCS&W! (Got it used and the LGS lost the box...... and 15rd. mag that they said came with it)

I didn't even think about the pinky rest, but you're right. So this could be the 6906 equivalent to the 5906 PC 3 1/2", both of which do not have the ambi safety? You said you have one, have you ever seen any others besides yours and this one? I am guessing if it's not listed in the Standard Catalog, that the production numbers have to be fairly low?

First off, welcome to the Forum! Good folks here, and great information particularly from some of the fellows who have been here for quite awhile and if they haven't seen it all, they've seen purty durn much of it!

I asked a question awhile back about a pistol for sale on another site, and here's that thread. The consensus was that it was a 5906 PC Compact with the 3.5" barrel. In other words, what a "Shorty 9" also is -- it's just a different run from the Performance Center.

As you can see, you have a very valuable model. It will be an excellent home defense weapon for its lightweightness, supreme accuracy, and ammo capacity for its size. Congratulations!

Ahoss, you're actually correct, and so is Bam-Bam. For some reason, these originally were referred to as "5906 PC Compacts" and even labeled that way on their cases, when in fact they were built on 6906-sized frames. Go figure. Handgunner 356 is an expert on these, and I refer you to his post on here too.

The 5906 PC-9..... NO Picture in the SCS&W ......was a Lew Horton Special

The way I read the description in the SCS&W: a 5906 PC-9 has a full size 5906 frame "15-shot magazine" mated to a "3-1/2" barrel".

Kind of a PC version of ......... (5943SSV but traditional double /single action.)........ another Lew Horton special........the .......5967 (1990) page 318 SCS&W!

Vigil...... you may/could be correct but without the Box(s) who knows how S&W labeled it. LOL with Smith anything is possible!!!!!!!!

ahoss..... mine looks like the original post...... it is a 6906 frame with a blue steel slide and novack sights.....non checkered front strap and single sided safety. I've never been able to match it to any of the descriptions in the SCS&W of a PC 9mm gun.

thanks for all the input gang. the safety is not ambidextrous, left-side only. SER# is PCV06xx.
