is this a fair deal?

It appears that all the wording has been buffed or polished off the gun except for "Smith & Wesson" on the right side of the barrel. I doubt the factory would do that.

That is alot of money for any gun. I would not pay that.

my highly educated, and somewhat wealthy friend ColbyBruce hit the nail on the head.....
who on earth spent all day polishing all the marks off that thing????
if they did THAT to it, I would be afraid of what other "modifications" it may have....
of course, I am not looking to buy it either, but for that kinda money seems like you could do better IMO

Based on the circular-pattern parts on the sideplate/frame, I'd bet someone took an electric buffer to it. Yikes.

Run! Run Fast!! and don't ever, ever look back!!!

It looks like he wants all his money back for his modifications. I personally don't think what he did is worth all the extra money. I don't think he added much to the defensive capabilities and absolutely ruined any collectible value. He does look like he's adding easily $100 or more in ammo and holster if you add value to stuff like that. I normally don't add value to accessories, but with ammo being as expensive as it is... I would feel ok (just barely) for the package at $450 TO $500 for the ammo, holster and the 'modified' 640.

I would look for another unmodified 640. They are nice guns but I would be leary of that one. Lots more out there.

no

`looks like the seller is trying to recover the cost of the work he had done, passing on his errors in judgment to the next fool, so dont' let it be you. cost recovery analysis rarely pans out when dealing with custom mods.

S&W didn't buff that revolver and those type markings are not left in stainless by the factory. Steer clear of that one.

Thank you everyone for your honest opinions, I dodged a bullet on this one (no pun intended).

I learned two things from this experience:

1) When in doubt about an S&W, ask on the S&W forum.

2) DON'T have a few beers BEFORE perusing the internet auctions sites and forum classifieds sections :) Yesterday was "that kind of day" and I must have had beer-goggles... I was seeing what I wanted to see.

Thanks again.

"While I do not agree at all with this statement, I think $650.00 is waay too much for THAT PARTICULAR gun."

Mod27, you need to come to Atlanta and let me take you shopping. You would be suprised at what $650.00 will buy if you know where to look, LOL!
