Is THIS a Franengun

I have a 5 screw 31/2" Premodel 27 s/n S75704 on the butt & cylinder, but it is marked 18912 on the yoke and frame under the yoke the gun has been nickel plated but not a factory job.
anny help is most appreciated.

The numbers you see on the yoke and in the yoke cut on the frame are assembly numbers. If they match, the yoke is original to the gun. Yokes were fitted to frames before final polishing and bluing/nickel plating and the numbers were stamped on those parts - as well as on the inside of the side plate - so those parts could be matched up at the final assembly stage. The serial number is also stamped on the rear facing surface of the yoke, and can be seen by looking through one of the chambers or by removing the cylinder and yoke from the gun.

I would say 1950 is very close. My S 998xx was shipped 9/1953.

More than likely as the post transition change occurred at about S75000 so logic would dictate S75704 would be a 1950 gun, but Smith did not do things in serial order so unless Roy gives you a ship date nothing is set in stone. S79196 did ship in 1950, S78XXX shipped in 51...go figure.

On a gun of that vintage the serial will be stamped on the rear face of the cylinder and on the underside of the barrel so you can check to see if the parts are original to the frame.

But I suspect all that's happened is a refinish.

I have a 75959 that letters as shipping in 1950. Like previously stated, only a letter will say for sure, as Smith shipping dates are unpredictable.

Disregard the matching yoke/on the frame behind the yoke numbers.If the butt/cylinder/barrel match,it's original-not made from married parts.

Sorry to bring this thread back from retirement, but may I get confirmation that the serial number on this Pre-27 is indeed S75704?

Because there is another thread going a the moment which assigns that serial number to a Heavy Duty. We are talking about two different guns because the HD is reported as a blued gun, and this one is nickel.
