LGS has a marked 19-3 round butt, it has a 4" barrel. However the first thing I see is the extractor isnt shrouded. The a close look shows the barrel is marked 38spl. They have it marked up as if it were some thing special.

I didnt think they made a 4" RB 19?

I seem to think it was a 19-3 2 1/2 that someone swapped on an old M15 barrel on? They said it will chamber 357 rounds. I didnt look that close, busy store and a price of $895

It was wearing a nice pair of factory combats...

So is it ultra super rare gun or its so super rare that it wasnt even made at the factory?

I can find no references anywhere to a 19 without a shrouded ejector rod.

If it were factory made in .38 Special, .357 Magnum should not chamber.

K-frame models in .38 Special have a shorter cylinder. If there is ~1/8" gap between the front face of the cyl. and the frame, it's long enough to be a magnum cylinder, if the gap is ~1/4" it's definitely not.

My vote would be a rebarrel. A .38 Special barrel can be shortened to mate with a magnum cylinder (it would mean cutting a new forcing cone).

Unless someone can come up with some rare and mysterious unknown variant, I would walk far away from it. No telling why it had the barrel swapped, maybe the original was ruined somehow?

IMHO the $895 asking price is about $893 too high...

SCSW does list a "19-3, 2" barrel round butt in .38 Special caliber without barrel shroud". Never say never, but I agree probably a rebarrel/rebuild

I didn't know they made a 4" model 19 RB. Learn something new all the time.
I guess what I know was that all 2 1/2" Snubs had to be round butt. I have never seen a 4" RB.. any one have a pic?

There were 4 inch round butt Model 19s. They were typically made on special order. The most famous among them were the ones made for the Navy (ONI), which got handed off to the FBI.

Here is a thread about the Office of Naval Intelligence (ONI) Model 19s with 4 inch barrel and round butt:

Later, when S&W switched to all round butts, there were 4 inch round butt Model 19s in both .357 Magnum and in 38 Special, but as far as I know, they all had shrouded ejector rods, even the 38 Special Model 19s.

Okay, you got me there. I went back and re-read the section and found that entry.

So I will not say never, but I will say . . . why?

A Model 19 in .38 Special without an ejector shroud is . . . a Model 15 on a 19 frame.

Hmmm.

This is a factory lettered four inch, round butt Model 19-3, sent to a Chicago distributor in 1970. It is marked 357 magnum on the barrel.

Having lived in SW CT for far too long, I can tell you more about your LGS than the revolver. If the LGS happens to be in Norwalk near the RR tracks, he's full of it and you're getting ripped off. If he's the shady Class III guy in Stamford across from the strip mall on High Ridge, he's definitely full of it, and you're getting ripped off. If he's behind the furniture shop in Darien, he's full of it too, and you're getting ripped off. If you ventured up to Hoffman's, you're probably getting a re-barrel that a sales guy knows nothing about, but you're not intentionally getting ripped off.

A Chicago Distributor? :) H.H. Harris, I bet!

Ole' Herbie Harris really had a knack for knowing what made "cool" and very functional revolvers.

Recall that he had 5 inch K38s, 4 inch round butt 19s and 5 inch 29s, among others. I am not really sure if those were his ideas, or the factory's ideas or a combination, and I think the 5 inch 29s were his idea. In any event, he seemed to have a pretty good pulse on what worked and what did not.

It is too bad that some of those specials that H.H. Harris got were not incorporated into regular production.

:)

Thats too funny !!!! :)

Things have changed a little bit

The original Norwalk guy sold the place out a few years ago. They went bust, and seemingly ran away literally, fled the county says the story. It sat empty for a while but it now opened by some decent people, Hillers Sports.

The High Ridge guy is gone, so is the other guy that was in stamford, thank the ex mayor now Governor.

Darien place is ok, but you just pay top of the market price. Sometimes they miss something and you can get a deal.

Hoffmans, I've only been there once or twice. To far for me, limited used guns. Lot of new, lots of lines and limited parking. They moved in the last several years and now have a range.

Yup, it was a Harris gun. I spotted it on an auction site a few years back. The price was low and I figured it was a rebarrelled 2 1/2 inch. I lettered it anyway and was happy to find out it came from the factory with a four inch barrel. The gun appeared unfired but did not have the box or any accessories.

I liked the configuration so much that I bought a four inch 19-7 to carry as the pictured gun is too nice to mess up.

S&W 19 4" round butt.

I have a beautiful S&W 19-6 4'' barrel with shroud and a factory round butt.
It is a beautiful S&W blue and i believe i'm going to sell it. Little or no turn mark.
Bill

I have never seen a 19 without a shroud, as close as I could come to the description of the gun in question is this one of mine. It is a 19-8 round butt, the barrel is marked 38 Special but it does chamber a .357 and has a barrel shroud.
