Is this a problem?

Got back from the range today with my M&P 9 FS, and while cleaning it, I noticed something. On the frame, where the back of the slide meets flush with the frame, it looks like the left little piece that sticks up is chipped. In the pics you can see that the chip is pushed down. I am thinking that this isn't anything to worry about? Or should I contact S&W? Hopefully the pics work.

Just quickly looking at my Shield 9mm,
which is very similar.
It looks like a defect in the polymer when it was molded.
Although a chip is very possible.
I would email the picture to CS and see what they say.

Is it a new gun?

That little projection is there to close the slot in the slide for the ejector to pass through while the slide is being installed on the frame. It serves no structural purpose, it's just to keep lint & debris out of the works while the weapon is holstered.
