New to hand guns and the m&p 9 fs. I was having accuracy troubles, so decided to practice with dry firing tonight. I checked to make sure the mag and gun were clear, re inserted the mag, and cocked back the slide. The slide locked back on its own, and that makes sense to me seeing as the mag was empty but for some reason I don't remember it doing that before. Is that normal? Thanks guys, sorry for the dumb questions. Is it just paranoia from reading about the problems people have? Lol

Yep, is normal. It's supposed to lock back once the mag is empty. Congrats and welcome to M&P land.

When it locks to the rear with the mag empty that allows you to drop that mag and insert a new one then chamber a round to continue shooting rapidly. In other words, rapid reload... Welcome aboard...

Definitely intentional - if you look through the ejection port you will see a little tab on the slide lock lever sticking into the opening from the left (toward the front). A flat spot on the magazine follower (the grey part) pushes up on this tab when the magazine is empty, just as if you did it with your thumb on the outside.

If you were to remove the slide, this is what you'd see:
Here you can see the magazine follower pushing up on the slide stop tab. The slide stop will in turn go into the notch in the slide and hold it back.
