Is this normal?

I just picked up my M&P shield from my FFL after ordering online. I was cleaning and oiling it last night and spent a good amount of time on the barrel. Today I inspected before I was going to take it to the range and noticed that it spotty. Probably not the best description. Link to pictures: Imgur: The most awesome images on the Internet

Do you have any dental picks? If so, see if what happens with the point of one of them when it encounters one of the spots. That should help you determine if it's corrosion or dirt.

Have you used a brass brush in it yet? If not, wet a patch through the barrel, let soak for awhile, then scrub with brass brush. If not improved contact S&W.

What did you clean it with ? I would get a rod, brass bore brush , good bore cleaner and give it a good scrubbing....to me it just looks dirty.
If it doesn't clean up , call S&W.
Used gun right....that's the chance you take buying over the net. I don't buy any gun unless I can put my hands and eyeballs on it. Like buying a pig in a poke , as my daddy would say .

While I agree it looks like it could be grease, there is no reason why it would be grease. There is no grease used in the manufacturing process, nor should there have been any used in the assembly process. I also doubt that S&W would have any reason to put grease in the barrels even for storage purposes.

Your right but the OP said he was cleaning the gun last night and spent a good amount of time on the barrel. Could have been that something transferred from his brush or patches to the barrel. This is assuming he noticed that after his cleaning

Did no one notice the gouge in the land (and groove) at 9:00 in the barrel? And read the OPs post! New gun, not used!

I don't have an explanation or even a guess as to what it is, but definitely looks like scaly rust!

To OP, call S&W Monday morning, 800-331-0852, and arrange to send it back to the factory, that is where it needs to go. Don't forget to mention the gouge in the rifling too.

What did the OP use to "clean and oil it" (his words) before taking the picture. If you study the picture, it looks like the right side is a smooth bore . . .

Are we looking at the same pictures? I don't see anything that looks smooth....

You said you ordered it on-line but did not say if it was new or used.

What I would do is before shooting it I'd thoroughly clean it with a good solvent, a Bronze Bore Brush and see how it looks. If it still looks the same I'd call S&W if it was a new purchase and offer to send photos.

I would DEFINITELY clean it PRIOR to shooting it as shooting it will tend to pack the dirt and debris into the lands & grooves and make it that much harder to clean afterwards.

Any light corrosion and debris SHOULD come out with a good quality Bronze Bore Brush. I'd love to see another picture AFTER cleaning it.

appears to have been scrubbed but looks like the last touch was inserting a dirty patch in the barrel chamber and then turning clockwise/counter clockwise .. leaving lint and and wet crud in the barrel chamber -- there does not appear to be any barrel damage to me, just a dirty barrel from what I see.

I would just re-clean it . . start by soaking the barrel (feeding end) into a bottle of Hoppe's Solvent and let it soak for 10 minutes and use a brass brush and some patches .. if that does not get rid of what appears post chamber .. than a more aggressive lead removing solvent may be needed..

I like the mil-spec patches that we used for cleaning m-16's and the 9mms .. they were tough, and held solvent and oils well, and more importantly, they did not leave cotton fiber after you pass it through the barrel.

I've seen of course much worse than this .. and remember, that even after you clean a gun .. while you may have removed most of the fouling, that stuff seeps out for a few days after cleaning.
