Looks fairly used, I do wish I had an extra 400! I'd love to pick up another smith.

What do you guys think of it?

It appears to be a fairly worn model 10, likely a -5 or 7, with the standard tapered 4" barrel. It depends on how hard you to want to look for one (online auctions, dealer web pages, etc.) but to me it is about $100 too high. Local selling conditions and your bargaining abilities need to be considered :). Hope this is helpful.

That's about what I'd expect to see for a Model 10 these days. I see them offered on online sites for less, but by the time I added shipping and transfer fees, there isn't much difference.

As always, I'd offer less. What's the worst thing that can happen? They'll say no?

The worst:
1. shoot your dog
2. run away with your wife
3. burn your barn
4. ??

Centerfire Systems offers similar or better condition with heavy barrel for $100 less. There are better deals to be had. However, if you are in CA your situation may put things in a different light.

Seems a might high for condition. There are price differences around the country and you can find cheaper on GB and online if you spend the time and look around. I got a barely used 10-5 in a GB auction last year for $317. That said, I would make an offer on that 10-5 in your picture of $325-350 and see where that would go. If you want it bad enough and they are not seen as much in your area, then buy it for $400. It's only money, your money at that! If you just want a shooter, get one of the Centerline guns, they are heavy barrels, later models but will shoot very nice.

For a plain jane S&W .38 special I would agree that it's a tad high. The S&W .38 M&P or the subsequent Model 10 and its variations is the most widely produced gun in the S&W line with a little over 7,000,000 produced to date.

That said, it is not rare and there are hundreds if not thousands of police turn ins available all over the country at lower prices. It is by no means collectible so basically you are looking at a shooter.

IMHO, it is worth around $300 but again as others have stated, it depends on where you are in the country as prices tend to vary from state to state.

This looks about like the ones that come up at Bud's and other places for $299. Supporting your dealer, feeling before buying, tax vs. shipping, and other considerations might make it worth more, but I'd try for less than $325 as others have discussed.

All depends on local market conditions.

( Presuming mechanically sound) It is a bit too high ( or a bit too finish worn if you look from the other direction). But in my marketplace, not by the margin Ken158 reports in his local. More like $325 . With the going rate for transfers in my area of +/- $50 , plus shipping, would be approaching the crossover point for ordering a $299 . ( Y'all in the lands of $10 Transfers apply your local math.)

I agree with Murphydog.

I'd walk in with three nice, crisp one hundred dollar bills, lay them down, and stand back and watch.

It's amazing what the smell of cold, hard cash will do at times!

A bit high priced vs its condition (that I can see from a picture.)

Lots of 10s around, but if the dealer come down a hundred or a bit more I would have much more interest!

Thanks nylakesider, I'll probably have to pass anyway, just was drooling a bit lol

Thank you all for the replies, this site is as addicting! Haha I will have to see what he can do on it.

I personally have never seen the appeal of a M10. Nothing wrong with them, but certainly not something to drool over. If that were a M14 or 15 at that price in that condition, I would probably take a closer look at it.

I found one a couple of weeks ago priced at $250. The problem was the hammer was broken and the cylinder release was minus a spring. I did a bundle with a 19-3 and a mid 20's era 1905 and wound up with $125 in the model 10-5. The hammer and spring have since been replaced and it will live in my old pick up truck.

Back when Dean's Sporting Goods was in Casper (not a long drive by Wyoming standards) you'd have a pretty decent store to visit a few times a year. Dean had quite a few cases of handguns and had a lot of used revolvers. I visited the Army recruiting station in Riverton quite a few times and didn't ever see a Dean's-like emporium ... Given that there's a Taurus and a big-bore Ruger to either side of it - it kinda looks like the selection there is limited ... :(

It's really unusual to find older S&Ws (pick a Model) in Fremont County. That's likely why he's asking so much. Or maybe he paid too much. I agree with the other folks; $400 is too steep for that particular Model 10.

Cheers,

Bob

Thanks Bob! So nice to see a fellow wyomingite on here! I too haven't seen many running around the state, but if I had plenty of extra money I might work on them. There are better deals out there though.
