Issues with 9mm shield

Every 10 rounds or so the slide will get stuck back and not put another round in the chamber. I'm able to slam it forward with my offhand but I would rather not do this, not to mention it would suck in an emergency situation. It has been doing this since the first time I shot it. I have been using different brands of ammo.

I'm open to any ideas on what can be causing this. Thanks.

Perhaps the locking block spring is sitting proud of it's recess.

Should look like the one on the left, not the one on the right.

Eventually, it may pull free and look like this.

Is your Shield brand new? If so, you may need to use higher power ammo to fully cycle the slide on a tight new gun. The various brands of ammo you are using all may be fairly weak, especially if they're 115 grain. I suggest trying Winchester NATO 9mm 124 grain ammo. It is easy to find, it's powerful, and best of all, it's fairly cheap. It's also the most accurate for me in my 9mm Shield.

Also, check the position of your thumb while shooting. It could be hitting the slide stop during recoil, inadvertently locking the slide back.

Another possibility is the recoil spring assembly. If it's not perfectly aligned, straight and level, when reassembling your Shield, it might not always cycle the slide. My Shield 9 came with a bent rear spring retainer disk on the recoil spring assembly which made it difficult to align properly. The result was a bunch of failures to eject.

Although unlikely, you may have a weak recoil spring assembly. If your Shield is really easy to rack, your recoil spring is weak. Shield 9s are notorious for being one of the hardest-racking semi-autos around if their recoil springs are at normal strength.

Those are my ideas off the top of my head. Other Forum members should be along to give their thoughts as well.

"Stuck back" or locked back? Is the slide lock engaged?

"slam it forward with my offhand". Do you whack the slide with your hand or are you releasing the slide lock?

How far back is it "stuck"?

I am having a similar issue using semi wad cutters both lead from a Lyman mold, and some commercial copper plated in my .45ACP Shield. I have experimented with minute changes in COL, but I suspect the problem is the extractor binding on the case rim. It happens with long time experienced brass

Stuck back, it does not engage the slide lock. I whack the back of the gun with my hand to push the slide forward. It's stuck about half way back.

Thanks for the reply. If it's a 1.0 Shield, look at what Bigwheelzip said.

If not, unload it, make sure it's clear. Rack the slide manually. Do you feel it "hanging up" somewhere? Did you clean and lube it recently?

What brands of ammo have you used?

Was this with both mags or did one seem to misbehave more than the other?
