Issues with M-22 Ammo

I put 525 rounds of rem .22 through my as of last sat virgin m&p ar15/.22 and about 1/3 of the shots had a drastically quieter sound. Had about 25 ftf. Got to get a good cleaning kit and going to put federal through next

I'm glad I started this thread... Those that have had success with m-22 might have been 'lucky'.

I bought mine from cabelas in February and March....

I have a suppressor and quite a few stayed subsonic in the 16" barrel. It's listed as 1255ft/sec so that shouldn't happen unless under charged.

I will post my lot numbers when I get back from vacation. Funny, midway just sent me a 'back in stock' notification for back ordered m22. Not gonna buy at any price except free and even then I might not use it.

Since you are new to the 15-22, I'll let you know how mine acts. I shoot subsonic ammo, CCI Standard Velocity & Norma Tac-22, using a 22Sparrow suppressor & CMC trigger. My last outing I had only one failure & it was a stovepipe (I do also have a deflector attached)... but no failures to fire. That is the first failure of any sort that I have had in the last 1000 rounds. I do keep my gun well cleaned & properly lubricated. I will also state the CMC trigger strikes real hard & I feel certain it helps eliminate ftf, as I had those prior to installing that trigger.

I'm getting the same iffy results with Win M22 in both my 15-22 with Geissele trigger (plenty heavy hammer fall) and my Ruger 22/45 with its' reduced power hammer spring. Same deal with M22 FTFs in both, they go bang just fine or even with repeated hits it won't go bang...

I have no experience shooting the M-22, as I shoot suppressed & until the stamp comes back for SBR, all I shoot is subsonic. I have purchased a fair amount of it but most has been for friends.

My comments were to give perspective to a new 15-22 owner. The right ammo fed into the right gun can lead to almost failure free shooting. Threads like this can point folks into the right direction... if they are having issues.

I rarely if ever have problems with any .22lr ammo I have.
Maybe it's because all the ammo I have is mostly 5 or more years old.

Maybe it's new production ammo that's being cranked out at high rates, with less quality control.

I fired at least 1500 rds of M-22 out of my 15-22 last year with no more than a half dozen malfunctions. I wouldn't have broken into these January purchase boxes so soon since I still had several older boxes, but when I received this shipment it looked like monkees had packed it. Bullets spilled everywhere when outer carton was opened. The cases also looked tarnished compared to what I was used to seeing with this ammo. So I decided to shoot it instead of earlier purchased M-22's.

And both boxes were full of duds.

Had the same issues as the OP. Bought a 300rd box in January. First 10rds, had 3 FTFs. Stopped, sent the box and 3 bad rounds back to Winchester. They sent me a check for $50. No more M22 for me.

I just got back from the range. I shot 120 old (15yrs) Remington, no issues. Shot 100 each fed automatch, CCI blazer, 120 Winchester (new) 2ftf (both m22), 100 CCI and stingers no issues. Both win fired on recycle. My opinion of wins has increased, same with rems. All where shot through a S&W 15-22. I sold a lot of rems and wins on bad advice of others. Now it will be hard to replace them at 5 cents a round. This is fresh unbiased advice. BiggB

I just got 300 rounds of Remington Hollow Point Subs as part of a top up to some Winchester Hollow Point Subs that I usually use as my supplier had run out of said Winchester.
I know. I know. Remington don't function well in the Smiths, will give them a go and see what happens. The Winchester don't work well by all accounts but so far I haven't had any major issue. Will see what the Rems do and let you know if I get any real/serious problems.
Just thought I would add this in for us poor Brits to try the comparison.

Rob. :D

Wow. Lots of guesswork about the failure modes. Has >anyone< diagnosed the problem? Pull the bullet out of the dud(s) and:

1) See if there's powder inside.
2) Look at the base inside for priming compound.
3) Measure the rim thickness.

That will go a long way in determining if the ammo is at fault.

Based on my experience with this more recent M-22 its a lack of priming compound. Had no problem with ejection when it actually fired, so I doubt if its the rims. Had no problems with consistent combustion when they went bang. Nothing like Remington's, so powder seems to be in a consistent proportion.

Went through a recently delivered box of m22s and no ammo related failures in 500 rounds. This through a 10/22 with a slidefire stock and the 15-22. Only failure were caused from light strikes on the 10/22 and casings bouncing back off the brass catcher. Each round that failed to fire was reloaded and fired.

I've had light primer strikes with M-22 ammo. Other brands have not given me this problem.
