I get on the treadmill for my daily 3 miles. Dogs comes downstairs and walks around sniffing (like he's never been there before) and then lays down. Bout 10 minutes, he starts barking. I ask him if he wants to go out. He runs to the bottom of the stairs and starts to bark even more. If the wife is not home, I have to get off the treadmill, walk up the steps and let him out. Then have to go back down stairs and get back on to finish out my walk.

It never fails. This is almost a daily occurrence. Aggravates the dickens out of me.

Why don't you take your walks outside in the real world? And take the dog with you.

Or let the dog out before you start your "walk".

Of things that "aggravate the dickens" out of me, walking up and down a flight of stairs to let the dog out wouldn't even make the list.

You're not alone. Dog owners all over the world get frustrated when the dog has to go pee. Mine does it as soon as I set down to a hot meal, every time. I get grumpy at her, but she's just a dog. Then I remember how much I love that little girl, and I go grab my coat.

Mine has to find that perfect blade of grass or bush in the yard.
But when on a walk, pees on everything he can. Well after a while he is just going through the motion!

Mine wants out at 2am and in the process the cat usually makes it past me.In the summer it's no biggie cause I can leave a window open for her to escape the fox and coyotes.Different game in the winter.
They own us!

A dogs behavior is directly related to what is liked, disliked and how well they have us trained. IMHO with Retired LTC's dog there could be a couple of issues at play. One is that something about the treadmill he/she/it don't like. Yep, seems a little strange but it's their world. Number two, an most plausible, is when you are involved with that routine the dog knows he does not have access to undivided attention. The dogs answer is to regain that attention by wanting to go out. Ever heard stories of an animal particularly cats batting at a newspaper when the owner is trying to read. Could be the same thing. Our hound can frequently go twelve hours and sometimes much longer without even thinking about going outside. But if the lady is home it's four or five times during the day an always at about the same intervals. If it's just him and me then at those well rehearsed times he won't even bother to wake up. He has her trained. Dogs are like humans they are all different and some are smarter than others. I suggest to LTC there is something there other than his wanting to irritate you. hardcase60

When i take my dog out for a walk i also take a jug of water so that he does not get dehydrated, Has to P on every spot that has been visited by any other animal .But as a side note after they replaced my knee walking him was the best therapy according to the Doc ,
