before I fell out of bed. I didn't get to bed until in the morning hours, wasn't sleepy so I watched movies. No excuse.
I bought a new mattress about a year ago and I have been switching sides every month or six weeks to give it even wear. The mattress is really thick and I made a mistake and didn't buy a thinner box spring therefore the bed is high. I switched sides before, switched night before lqst and had no problem. I sleep on my right side and was facing away from the edge of the bed.
I woke up, went to the bathroom and went back to bed intending not to go back to sleep. I did go back to sleep and one of those unwanted phone calls awoke me and as I turned over to reach the phone on the night stand I rolled off of the bed.
The bedroom furniture is HARD hardwood and has sharp corners and edges. My arm hit the top sharp corner of the night stand and just below the left elbow I got about a 2 inch tear in the thin skin. The side of my head hit the same corner and scraped the side of my face, my ear and head above and behind my ear. My ear had a little surface bleeding and just some swelling along with bruising as also happened with the side of my head. My left lower back is sore.
I thank the good Lord that I broke no bones, just bruised. Lesson learned. When you get in bed make sure that you are far enough center that you can roll over without rolling off. I was a dummy.

Glad you weren't banged up any worse. Falls are extremely dangerous as we get older. May be time to have someone who does "elder proofing" of homes come in to do an assessment to see where you might be able to minimize potential injury hazards. Here locally it is the Council of Aging. There usually is no charge and they help enable folks to stay in their own homes longer.

So, so sorry. Being awakened unexpectedly can be a bit disorienting, so do be careful. Maybe make a rule to count to 3, or 10, or something, before doing ANYTHING, especially standing up quickly, just so you know what you are getting yourself into. Regards.

Oh I wouldn't be too hard on yourself.

I keep stuff on the floor beside my bed and just roll over to pick it up.

Then I got a new taller mattress and rolled over to pick it up...THUD! :o

So glad your okay Graydon.
The advice about a hazard assessment is excellent. A few minor modifications might be quite helpful.
We got this monitored alert system for mom when she lived alone. She liked the wrist worn sensor which triggered if she fell.

Sorry to hear about the tumble. Glad no broken bones. Make sure you take care of those scrapes as an infection can be worse than a broken bone. Heal fast, BTW I love staying up late watching movies ! Usually, I wake up on the couch with the TV blaring as my wife would say.

I'm too please to know you seem to be ok. But I've done the same thing before and I'm 20 years younger. When I had my hip surgery I used a bed rail to keep me in bed and to help me pull myself up.

My dad had the exact same rail you show that he used before he passed, and now with knee surgery and a couple bouts of vertigo I've been using it after he passed. It definitely is a comfort to have it.

You must be in pretty good physical shape to "only" sustain cuts, bruises, etc. I'm only 63, but I keep the light in the shower on at night and it actually gives me enough light at night so I can maneuver enough without stubbing a toe or something worse before I turn on a real light.
So glad you are okay. Take care.

I have one of those bed rails, I have a ankle that gives out on me, I hold on to that when I get up, I fell twice and hit my face on the night stand, both times.
