It would be funny if . . .

We branched off into the degradation of "standards" in the recent "FASHION" thread, and I made my comments lamenting the present abandonment of standards in our society across the board, my view being that loosening standards (not "rules") always seems to invite abuse and deterioration until any standards are meaningless. Many let it be known that such was "no big deal", especially in matters of personal choice.

I ran across the blurb for this story above and was immediately struck by the crude, uneducated, grade school quality of expression that now passes for formal communication these days. The lazy man's excuse used to be "I just never could spell", but that excuse (at least in modern online writing) has been rendered all but meaningless since most every word processing/typing software these days has 'spell check', so the only excuse that fits would seem to be sloth. The prevailing attitude toward the mangling of grammar these days is "it's no big deal". Abandonment of standards. . .

The way we dress, the way we write and speak, manners, hygiene, the behaviors that we tolerate in public, the lack of consequences for the ignoring of laws we don't personally agree with, respect for authority . . . the list goes on and on. We don't uphold the standards that used to identify a civilized society.

Language defines a culture - and when we abuse language we make a rotten culture. If you don't think it's a big deal, if you think it's not that important . . . I suggest your head is in the sand and your attitude is part of the reason for the obvious decline of society. I guess we get and deserve whatever we stoop to accept . . . :(

Obviously, that's not the point, Rusty. It's quite obvious what she meant. I don't care how many degrees she has or doesn't have - she expresses herself as an uneducated drone that unfortunately by accident of birth, sex, or race or whatever leg up she got to obtain a job that should have "professional standards", she shouldn't have that job. Somehow those that think such does not matter seem to believe that this slide magically won't filter down to the guy who fixes your brakes, installs your gas furnace or opens you up for surgery; that they will have higher standards. That these other things don't matter. I beg to disagree.

OK, so, what do you want us, as individuals, to do about it, these "standards"? Better yet what are you doing about it?

There are no standards anymore. Social promotion started that. Inclusivity is the word. Can's discriminate against folks not meeting the standards, it hurts their feelings.

BTW, Nobody cares. There's nothing that you or I can do about it. Nothing. absolutely nothing. Again, nobody cares.

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL!!!

My resolution (yes I know that is the other thread) is to have nothing more to worry about in life than this.

Not sure any of you have noticed the words being put into the dictionary these days? While I sometimes scratch my head and wonder I realize, like said above, It just doesn't matter.

May your new year be filled with grammatically correct news stories and conversations.

I guess I look at it as language is a tool you use to ensure you get your point across and convey information accurately and concisely. Just as I would point out that a person was using the incorrect screwdriver on a S&W side plate screw, I would also point out the use of insure versus ensure in a written note.

What passes for journalism today would not have met my 6th grade teacher's standards for student performance. Today's newspapers would be covered in red pencil markings and returned for correction.

So-called journalists should be joining in class action lawsuits against the so-called educational institutions that granted their professional credentials.

No, I am not disrespecting certain people, but only because I know that disrespect is not (and has never been) a verb.

Push back.
This is what I'm doing. A pebble in the stream ? . . . lone voice crying in the wilderness ? Unfortunately the defeatist attitude is what brought us to this place . . . "Well, everyone is doing it !" . . . "I'm only one man - what can I do ?" That attitude has been eschewed by every man in history that stood against what he knew was wrong and triumphed against odds.

Some of us still have standards and hold to them. Makes us targets, puts us at odds with what some would say is the majority. I'll die on my feet rather than cowering and whimpering. Things will only truly bottom out when there's nothing and no one to look up to. Even then, there are a few of us that will continue to look up for our redemption.

Then why are you even commenting ? Celebrating surrender and defeat ? Leading the charge to the bottom ? You've given up . . you're making no difference . . . just go with the flow and take your place with the timid and tread the path of least resistance. I can keep the sidewalk in front of my place clean . . . I can maintain my integrity . . . I can offer help/support to those who have the courage to try. I can hold on to the truth.
And finally, you're wrong. Some of us still care very much. We eventually very well may overrun by the horde - but I'll be standing up - they'll have to run me down . . . I will not lie down for them.

Pushing back!? Exactly, who/what are you using back against?

Did you write to the writer and point out her errors? How did she take it?

Whether you like it or not society is changing. Language is changing. You're not going to stop it. No one is going to stop it. That's a fact. Stating that fact is NOT defeatist. It's reality.

Exactly who is targeting you and how? What are they doing?

OK. Sounds good.

Because I can. And I want to.

I'm not celebrating anything, I'm just pointing out reality.

I don't know about you but, I realize, that, getting upset over something I have no control over does no good for me or anyone else. On top of that, I'm wasting my time/energy correcting other folks over things that, in the big picture of life, are meaningless. I have other things to worry about.

I can keep the sidewalk in front of my place clean . . .
You're supposed to keep your sidewalk clean.

I can maintain my integrity . . .
You can.

I can offer help/support to those who have the courage to try. I can hold on to the truth.
No one is stopping you.

Anybody can care. In the end, caring, does what in this society? Nothing.

We eventually very well may overrun by the horde - but I'll be standing up - they'll have to run me down . . . I will not lie down for them.
We've already been overrun. The reality of no standards you and other's don't like and complain about is here and has been here for decades? Now what?

Accept it or don't. Adapt or don't. In the end, it doesn't matter.,

Something else that gets me lately......

Instead of people narrating videos, they feed the script into an AI voice rprogram that proceeds to make hash out of pronunciations of common words as well as words unique to the video. Does anybody check these? NO! Does anybody CARE that the video is a piece of **** with all the mistakes? NO!

I know this has been covered before but making words like 'should of' and a multitude of other *******ized terms in places where people should know better really irks me.:mad::mad:

I try to do the best I can as the Secretary of our town planning commission. When I was drafting requirements and exceptions to coverage for title insurance I had to write very carefully and precisely because the courts had a tendency to construe policy terms strictly against the maker. Now I am creating a public record that I sign my name to as a town official. When I prepare the meeting minutes I type them up and let them sit for a few hours before reviewing them. After a line by line review, I make the corrections and review the minutes again. After that I make the corrections for things I missed the first time. I don't know how many more years I'll be doing this, but I hope that I leave behind a good example for my successor.

That's my point. You're doing you.

We'll agree to disagree. Go your way in peace and trouble me no more. A rabbit cannot understand a fox . . . cause he's a rabbit. Happy New Year and all the best.

Ok Mr. Fox,

Happy New Year to you, too.

Here's a little something from my Catholic school days. I have tp edit so as not to offend anyone and get dinged, but I you'll understand what I'm trying to say:

"...grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference."

No hard feelings.

Best regards,

Multitudes of folks younger than I use the term "on accident". I understand exactly what they mean.

Some of the wisest people I have met in my lifetime couldn't distinguish syntax from thumb tacks.

I never needed a Rosetta Stone or a translation app.

So clips can be magazines? :o

Your right to some degree. But, just because the REAL truth is that in the end the sun will SUPERNOVA and the whole planet will become a cinder, doesn't mean I should be a blob, NOW.

So, you recommend just we all just stand around and watch as it happens? If I at least inject some small criticism or more likely in my case sarcasm, I become a rock or at least a pebble that is slowing the erosion that surrounds me, more rocks less erosion. If I am not rock, I am just part of the debri being swept into the mud flat which becomes a swamp.
