I've been visiting this site since the introduction of the Shield and now that they have finally made it to Costa Rica, I was able to purchase one for the low price of $700 cash, no credit cards. I have found this site to be very helpful in general and more so in helping me to make my decision in purchasing the Shield.

I am new to pistols and purchased my first one here in CR about 4 years ago. It was a low priced .380 ACP that I bought legally and my uninformed purchase was based on the limited availability of firearms here and the fact that I could conceal it very easy. Concealment was very important because I was not a permanent resident and I couldn't get a permit to carry. Before everyone starts to jump on me about breaking the law, I made the decision to do so after talking to my attorney's, there comment's were "I would rather see you to set bail then see you at your funeral". I carried it at very limited times, when traveling through the countryside late at night with my family, or on rare occasions when I needed to visit some not so friendly area's of the capital city.

After becoming a resident, I took a weapons training class and passed the practical and written exams required by law to obtain a CCP. Now that I can carry legally, I want a bit more fire power and something that would be more enjoyable to use at the range than my present mouse gun.

During my class and afterwards, I have rented the M&P compact and really liked it. I then went on a Internet search to find what I thought might be the best compact, or subcompact 9mm gun for me. Very limited choice's here, I found a SigP290 and S&P compacts available, no Beretta's, LC9, Kahr etc. available, so I decided to wait and look at the Shield. Now having purchased it, I only need to wait 4 to 6 more weeks for the government to complete the registration before I can pick up my gun. Bear in mind that I just obtained my CCP in April, which required the course and tests mentioned above, which was given by the National Police. In addition I had to pass a physological test, get finger printed and provide a clean police report. Now I need a copy of the physc test and a new police report because the old one is more then 30 day's old and it's still 4 to 6 more weeks to pick up my Shield. This gives me time to find a holster, which finally gets me to the topic of this post.

I am like a lot of other people and have a spare tire at my waist, which causes even my light weight mouse gun to cant outward at the grip, away from my body and this shows a bulge under my shirt. My pants are already tight and I don't want to buy all new pants to do IWB. I know that I can purchase heavier belts and cinch them up tight for OWB. I would like to have an OWB that doesn't have belt loops so it can be easily removed and yet still be securely attached to the belt. I am considering a Remora OWB for left hand use that I would wear on the right side between my belt and pants. This would allow the Velcro strap to be on the outside of my belt and the holster to be between my belt and pants, giving secure attachment to the belt, it would also allow the belt to hold the gun closer to the body. I am also considering the LaTour hybrid holster in the combat cut, worn in the same fashion.

I don't think that I am the only person to have thought of this and yet I have never seen it discussed on any of the forums I have visited. These holster's are not available here and before purchasing and shipping them here, I would like to hear from anyone who has tried to carry this way, regardless of the make of the holster and particularly from those who may own the two holsters I am interested in. Thanks in advance.

Have you considered pocket carry for such a small frame auto?

I carry in a full size M&P9 in my crossbreed and am gifted in the gut department. I couldn't be happier with the holster.

I am considering a Shield for a backup carry, and it'll be a pocket or ankle carry.

First of all, welcome to the forum.

You might want to take a look at the holsters made by our own Lobo. Lobo Gun Leather - Home

Something like this might be just what you're looking for. Snaps on and off the belt.

I think you'll find the Shield a bit big and heavy for pocket carry.

The Lobo pancake shown in post #3 is nice. You might also try the pure belt slide holster from Lobo. It might draw the gun in a little flusher.

Try one of the sticky backed holsters, like the Nemesis or the Remora. I will admit that they can be a little hard to re-holster but for carry that is not as much of an issue. Believe it or not the tighter your pants are the better they will stay in place and they really do stick to clothing and skin very well.
