Its a Spegel K-Frame Stock Kind of Day

Actually I'm on ALL of his lists--Hi Power, 1911 and revolver. Ive been waiting 7 years for my number to come up on the revolver list, 2 or 3 years on the others. In fact, I recently picked up a very nice set of 1911 stocks in English walnut.

If you're on his list he will call you when its your turn, there's just no rushing him.

Maybe you can answer this for me. When he calls you, do you have to KNOW what you want right then, or can you ask him to give you a day to decide exactly what you want? Can you only order one pair of grips or more than one pair?

My only set of Spegel stocks are on my 649. At my age a 3-7 year wait is not logical. I’m glad I have these. I bought these many years ago when the wait was a couple of months.
It seems a lot of custom stock makers are over worked and aging out. Any new ones coming up that you gentleman know of?

Culina has some nice stocks and is still currently producing and I hear that Kurt Harlow aka. (44 magget) is building some beautiful stocks.

Only Spegel's I have are on a HiPower.

I had a pair like that on a Hi Power. I still have it, without the Spegels. One panel split through the screw hole. Disappointing. I cannot remember what I did with them. I probably should have sent them back to Craig to see if they could be salvaged. Coulda, shoulda, woulda.

Larry,
When you get your call from Craig Spegel he asks if you need to take some time and you can then call him back with your order.
At that time he gives you a total and you mail him a check. About six weeks after he cash’s your check a wonderful package lands in your mailbox.
Here is the last order I received from him.

I have ordered as many as six pair on one order. He has never told me anything about a limit. I received this order January 2024 and the order before that was January 2019, so five years.

Because I'm still working and I'm in Honolulu I usually get a message on my phone from Craig when he calls. I call him back the next day with my order but I always ask if he has anything "special," wood-wise and if so I'll upgrade my order if I think it's something I'd like.

He usually calls a couple of weeks before he starts on the upcoming batch of orders so I would imagine a day's delay wouldn't be a problem but of course I can't speak for him.

For this last revolver order my name was just on his list--no numbers or types of grips involved. After calling him back I placed my order and now I'm just waiting for the box to arrive.

Call him, get on his list and just be patient.

Forgot to address this part of your question--I've ordered 2-3 pairs of stocks at a time; believe it or not my first revolver order was for a single SB N frame boot grip in dark cocobolo, which I received after a couple of years. Had I known how long I'd have to wait to place this last order I would have ordered at least one or two more at that time.

For this most recent order I figured that this might be my last chance to get some stocks from his so I ordered a few sets, all for Smiths I currently own and shoot frequently.

I would say that you ought to be able to order 2 or 3 sets without much of a problem but again, I don't speak for Craig.

It is my understanding that Curt Harlow is no longer taking orders.
I could be wrong and I hope I am. He does beautiful work. Culina doesn’t checker to my knowledge. Curt checkered a set of Culinas stocks for me. They came out beautifully.

When good work is done, books get closed fast unfortunately. Its a shame when its a one man band.

Wow Tim, those are some real lookers!

jc2721, thanks for the information. I look forward to seeing what you get!

They finally arrived!

I finally got in my order of Spegel grips this past Friday:

K fr. boot grips in cocobolo, 2 pair

K fr. extended boot grips:

K fr. conversion boot grips, extended:

J fr. boot grips

I really like the third pair--that black streak does it for me, lol.

IDK what the wait time is for his revolver grips--I know I "re-upped" for all of them--1911, BHP and revolver. The BHP grips should be next--one in cocobolo and a couple in "Bolivian Rosewood" (pao Ferro) that should be pretty nice--S+ or maybe even S++.

They come wrapped in a paper towel (actually a very high quality paper towel, judging by the thickness and soft feel) and the screw is taped to the inside of one panel. Craig signs his name and year of creation in gold sharpie on the inside of one panel, his CAS stamp is punched on the other.

When I ordered these back around Thanksgiving Craig told me that he was down to his last boards of cocobolo and it was pretty much all straight grain, standard "orangey" colored stuff, no high grade or dark cocobolo available. Too bad, I really dig the dark cocobolo and I'm glad I got mine while it was available (but this was years ago).

Lately, he has been using black pen

Currently 6-7 years for revolver stocks, 2-3 years for semi auto grips.
