Now I have the L that I've always wanted. It started life as a four inch M681 that served in Australia. Courtesy of Dave at Defensive Creations, it's now a smooth sided three inch model. The front sight is an SDM gold bead.

Should I stay with the Hogues or find some nice woodwork for it?

Our 686 came home with factory wood grips in 1993. They've never heard a shot. Put on the Hogue's the minute the 686 came home. Ugly darn things...I LOVE them. Just ugly!!!

Just saw someone has three sets of L/K frame round butt target grips/banana's for sale.....that 681 calls out for a butt trim!!!!!!

I also have a 681 I rescued from a pawn shop a few years ago. If you don't mind me asking, what did it cost for the barrel reduction and do you have a picture of the right side of the barrel. I'd like to see how the markings line up. I've been looking for a 3"er myself. Thanks

As others have said - that revolver deserves some nice wood grips.

A pair of modified magnas and a nice tyler t grip would suit that quite well.I REALLY like that front sight

Sweet, very sweet. I really like the front sight. My 681 is my all-time favorite revolver (and I have a bunch). However, I don't think I'd ever make it into a 3 inch, but I sure wish S&W would start making them again with a 3 inch barrel option.

Regarding stocks, I'm using Ahrends Smooth Tactical on my 681. They're reasonably priced, look great and fit my average sized hand perfectly. They have a S&W look to them but are smaller than factory targets and much more comfortable than OEM Magnas. Here's a pic that I've posted before.

Another vote for Ahrends. They fit my medium sized hands best. Haven't had a problem with them in the field. If you do nick one up badly, $70 to replace, not the end of the world.

I'd go with Ahrends. That barrel treatment and front sight are magnificent. I'd love to have one like it.

If you like the shape of the Hogue stocks, the same model in wood can be had.

I like the current stocks!
