On 10 May a massive coronal mass ejection (CME) was created by a large sunspot complex. This CME is what gave rise to the impressive auroras many saw around 14-15 May. Well, that sunspot complex has rotated round to face us again. It's the big one in the middle of the second picture. It's a bit smaller than it was, but it is still pretty active. Should it spew another large flare and CME, we could be in for another light show. I shall be checking the Earthsky website often to read their observations and prognostications.
Meanwhile, here's a couple of sun pictures. Oh, and for scale, remember that the Sun is 109 times the diameter of the Earth, meaning our home would likely fit in many of those sunspots with room to spare.
