It's been a good run, Toro, but adios!

I had a Toro that lasted 27 years.

My next one almost as long.

The mowers ( Toro, etc.) you buy at Lowes & HD are different than the ones you buy at a lawn mower store.

This wouldn't surprise me at all.
As someone who was a cash register dealer for many years, and sold Sharp electronic registers, there was a line of registers available to guys like me,and a line of registers sold by places like Staples, etc. The stuff sold through Staples was considered "throw aways".Not repairable, with no real parts source..

I got into the 60'/70's cub cadets, int 154 & farmall cub. I'm not into the newer throw away stuff.

I've been hearing about the terrible things that happen to small air cooled engines from ethanol fuel for years. I have a cheap store brand mower with a 3.75HP Briggs & Stratton bought in 1994. Around here all gasoline is 10% ethanol and has been since before'94. Mower still runs great, starts on first pull, burns no oil.

Personally I have to wonder if the horrors of "alky-fuel" don't have some relation to how often some change oil.

Engines? It's just hard to beat a B&S engine. Sure Hondas produce more HP. (with more complexity) But they cost a lot more. And just how much HP does a lawn mower really need?

Engines made in '94 should have hardened valve seats.

Your point about changing the oil is spot on. One of the first things to go is the rings.

How much HP? I guess that depends on how long you let the grass grow. Down here in Fl. if a cut is missed or you have no choice but to cut it wet, more HP is gonna keep you from stalling thus saving you from pulling the rope until your neighbors kids learn some new words.

Had a Toro Recycler for many years. I bought it because, at the time, it was supposed to be the best mulcher available. Changed oil, plug, filter, and cleaned the deck every year, twice a year when I was taking care of the folks lot too. When it finally gave up the ghost, I priced a new one, $900. That's a lot more than I can afford these days. Got a Snapper with a B&S engine for about half the price. It's a good machine, starts on the first pull, does what I need it to do. But, my old Toro, on the day it quit for the last time, mulched better that the new Snapper ever has. Guess you do get what you pay for.

My lawn is small enough that I use a hand powered mower. However years ago I had one with a Briggs and Stratton engine that never needed anything but gas. It ran for 15 years on its original oil and spark plug. Always started from the 3rd pull first time each season and the 1st or 2nd pull for the rest of the season

A question was asked, and experienced Toro users replied..
Don't like the question, pass over it.

My first Toro had a Briggs and Stratton, my second one had a Tecumseh, and the one I just got this spring has a Kohler. They've all been pretty good, but would actually like the Honda ;-)

Not that I am 75 I hate them all....Worse than a woman, in fact much worse...Temperamental, hard to figure out, always need some thing, and when you need them the most, they won't start......My real peeve is the ones that make it almost impossible to set the height on...I know there are some that start out good but soon take on the weaker sex traits. Get them to hot and then they really go south on you...If the creator wanted short grass he would have made it that way or gave us all a goat.......I say most of this in jest, however anybody that spends any time around a lawn mower know what I'm talking about...When I had to cut almost 30 acres of grass I had a Grasshopper a big one...It was a fine and fast machine untill it needed service, then I thought I had a Porsche when I got the repair bill....However it did cut and cut and cut.....But no bearings in the cutter?????? I hate them all!!!!!

I have a Black & Decker corded electric mower for 15 years. I've been trying to get it to bread but it won't. So, last month I told my honey "I have a bad feeling, I know this thing is just about worn out", and went out and bought a Black & Decker 36 volt battery powered one. I have a city lot size place to mow and this thing lasts for four or five mowings without needing to recharge it. I'll see how long this one lasts......

Many years ago when I was shopping for a mower I looked at what every landscaper uses as a hand mower and that's what I got. Snapper. My first one lasted about 25 years but would have lasted longer but I just wanted a new one. Another Snapper and I expect it to outlast my ability to cut grass. Apparently they have begun selling a low end model I went for the commercial, a little more money but has a Honda engine. I have no tolerance for ****.

Electric...Sounds good.....In my case I would probably run over the cord and short out the whole darned thing and start a fire at the plug on the garage.....Burn up the mower, and burn down the garage....Did I say I hate lawn mowers....Push, Ride, now I hear there is a remote mower for folks with a city lot..Wonder if it will work while I'm watching TV...Probably not...DARN.
