I grew up in Kailua, but move up to Portland in '97. I've spent most my working life being outdoors (carpenter, contractor) and I was really in fear of my first winter here in Oregon. I probably bought every kind of glove known to man in a somewhat fruitless effort to keep my hands warm. Lets just say it was a steep learning curve.
One of the guys I worked with then never, ever wore gloves. I'd watch him handling frozen lumber and just couldn't believe that he could do that, and still be able to handle his tools, nails and screws, etc. When I asked him about it he said, "Yeah, my hands hurt, but only for the first hour or two..."
Funny thing was, when the weather warmed up he just could not tolerate temps above 70 degrees. He had a hard time believing it when I told him that was jacket weather in Hawaii.
Aloha to the keiki o' ka'aina
ETA, only 28 degrees here right now, wind chill at 17. Not bad, if you're not out in it
