It's Not a New Colt Cobra But It Will Do.

Colt Police Positive cylinder diameter~1.4 inch
S&W K Frame cylinder diameter~~~~1.45 inch

May not seem like a lot, but it is in a pocket. There is also about the same difference in the frame size. Cylinder is shorter, frame height is shorter, total length of frame is shorter. The difference with a 4 inch barrel on S&W 64, and Colt PPS is about 3/8 inch even though they have the same barrel length.

It could be that Colt made the new Cobra larger, but if not the Cobra would clearly be more pocketable than the K frame with the same barrel length.

Yup, cylinder diameter is the same, also if the grip frame is the same as the late production Detective Special boot grips would be considerably shorter than round but K frame. Also keep in mind Colt double actions are timed like tuned single action fast draw revolvers, this is what creates the bank vault lock up when the trigger is fully pulled. Without the slower timing, and same lock up, the trigger would have no play past the sear, making the gun non operable. Colts were not designed for slow fire, but even if they are the lockup is completed the moment the trigger is pulled.

I think mine is fine in single action. But in DA I get lead spitting out the side and terribly off center primer strikes. And a gunsmith told me it was out of time.... I'm pretty sure it's out of time.

Everything has it's upsides and downsides. I like my 442 but it's not without it's faults. When I'm working on shooting from the draw and shooting at speed, I'm not always super aware of my right thumb and the takedown lever has more than once drawn blood. I don't really mind, but it's kind of annoying. Although my daughter looked at me like I was bad to the bone because it didn't really phase me when we were shooting last time. So I think I got tough points. It really doesn't hurt that much. But I'm a little worried about it getting infected when it happens. Half the time there is black stuff that stays in the skin for a while. LOL.

And yeah, the 5 rounds makes me always wishing for more......

Darn, that looks painful, never had a problem with j frame latch biting me, but I tend to hook my thumb down while shooting.

I hook it down too. But I guess just not enough at times. I have to consciously do it and sometimes I don't quite achieve optimum position when going fast and not thinking about it.

CLARIFICATION:

Double checking my 64-2 against the stats for the new Cobra published in American Rifleman:

Colt Cobra: Length 7.2", Height: 4.9", Width: 1.4", Weight: 25 ounces
64-2: Length: 6.5", Height: 4.6", Width: 1.45", Weight 28 ounces w/stock grips and Tyler T-grip.

I'm not saying that American Rifleman is 100% on their stats, or that I couldn't be off by a tenth of an inch on height and length because they're a bit hard to measure exactly. They do show the Cobra with the rubber grips that extend below the grip frame and they do cover the back of the grip frame, so if you can find, make, or modify grips to fit the new cobra you could shave some height and a little bit of length off it. Apparently my memory was slightly off when I said the two guns are virtually identical in size and weight as the Cobra is obviously longer and the 64-2 weighs 3 ounces more, and either of these could make a difference if you pocket carry. Personally, I only have a few pockets that either revolver would fit in, they're all in coats or jackets, and I don't carry the 64-2 in them because the hammer gets hung up on the way out of the pocket, so for me personally the differences are pretty much nil. YMMV

SKU: 162662
Model: Model 66
Caliber: .357 Magnum, .38 S&W SPECIAL +P
Capacity: 6
Barrel Length: 4.25" / 10.8 cm
Overall Length: 9.6"
Front Sight: Red Ramp
Rear Sight: White Outline, Adjustable
Action: Single/Double Action

Four inch model 66 states, substract 2 1/4 inches for 2 inch, and 1 1/2 for the 2 3/4 models. That puts a model 65 with a 2 inch barrel at 7.35 inches. Stats are directly from S&W.

Of course changing grips on both the Colt, and the 66 would change length, and height stats. But considering the very short grip frame of the Colt that puts the 66 at even more disadvantage.

I do not pocket carry, I usually carry nothing less than a 4 inch revolver. So I am not interested in the Colt Cobra, I would be a new Police Positive. The 66 is a good CCW gun for IWB, or OWB for some people, I used to carry a model 64 four inch IWB just as easy as any two inch. I saw no need for a two inch for that. I did carry a Colt Cobra for backup in my uniform pocket. I eventually traded the Cobra for a J frame as even the Cobra was a tad too much for tailored uniform pants. A K frame would have been ridicules in the pocket as a backup.

I will add that if I was going for a small six shot revolver Colt, S&W, and Kimber would not get the sale. I would go with the 327 LCR, Smith should bring back a six shot 32 J frame. Last I checked the little Ruger would not last in my LGS display case long.

I really think the rubber grips are mucking up the situation as to how big it really is..... Here are some that look a bit smaller but even still are not to the contour of the frame....

Love my 66-3 snubby. That Colt Cobra would be awesome, if blued. The Kimber makes a Ruger SP 101 look like a prom queen.

I, too, have been looking in gun stores for the new Colt Cobra as well as the new Kimber6 revolver. I haven't found either yet, though I have encountered younger store clerks who don't understand revolvers. Funny, yet sad. I also have a S&W model 66 with the 2.5" barrel; it's a great gun but not the easiest to conceal for me. That's why I am interested in the Cobra and Kimber6 ... since S&W no longer offers the models 10, 13, or 64 in 2" barrels. Enjoy your model 66.

Where do you find these 2" Model 13's?

Someone else mentioned a 2" Model 65, I am also wondering where to find these, and how did I not know about them before? ;) :p
