I was trimming my hair on the porch, and saw this little fella (or gal) taking shelter from the storm.  Man we've had a lot of rain.

I didn't have the heart to move it into the rain, so I went my way, and hopefully it'll go a different way when ready.

Definitely a rat snake, not sure which in particular.

It's moved aound a little, and there's a big lump in the middle. If it's a mouse, it must be small, because the snake isn't very big.

As long as I can see round pupils, I'm cool.

Coral snakes have round pupils. Pit vipers, slit eyes.

True dat, but the probability of one being where I live is nearly nonexistent, and since I don't put my bare hands in piles of leaves, mulch, etc., they're pretty far down on my list of concerns.

Looks to be a black rat snake. I'd say a female because of the long tapered tail. If it had just eaten, maybe a small mouse or toad or similar.

Far as snakes, at least in this part of the world the coral snake has a blunt face with a black nose while the scarlet king has a more tapered head with a red / orange tip.

When I was very young, I was a typical southern boy playing with snakes, and everything else. Now I leave them all alone to play their part in the world except for venomous reptiles that want to hang around the house.

It bothers me when I see TV shows where some yayhoo is grabbing animals and waving them around for the camera, stressing them out. Perhaps I've become too soft hearted, and maybe soft headed, in my dotage.

Actually quite a fun little vermin devourer. We let them stick around to eat rodents and such as that.

I, like you, only kill venomous ones if around my living spaces.
Also when I use to quail hunt in West Texas I would kill
rattlesnakes if they were threatening the bird dogs. Otherwise
live and let live.
