I'm in the market for a IWB mag holster. Would love to bring my extra mags with me when carrying. I have 2 extra mags that came with my G23 so I was originally looking at double mag holsters.

But then someone mentioned that the rather large double mag holster can be quite uncomfortable. He suggested to me to get 2 individual mag holsters because they are usually much smaller and can be positioned more comfortably. Definitely made sense and got me thinking.

So just wondering what everyone's thoughts on this is. Especially from owners of both. Pros and cons and such. Because I'm torn between the two, but leaning towards the 2 single mag holsters now.

I agree with your friend. 2 mags in an IWB is painful.

I also think that two separate pouches are better than a double pouch.

However, I really don't see a reason for an IWB mag pouch - an OWB or on the belt pouch is fine and of course much more comfortable, and slightly quicker and easier to access.

Any covering garment that is long enough to cover and conceal a firearm carried IWB will also easily be able to conceal even an OWB mag pouch (or two). In many years of carrying I've never been outed because someone spotted my mag pouches. Furthermore, so many people carry stuff on their belts nowadays (cell phones, mostly) that most people, if they did happen to see a bit of leather or plastic peeking out from under the hem of your shirt, I'm sure would assume it to be something completely innocuous.

The G23 is a kind of thick pistol, with correspondingly thick mags. I certainly would not want to carry the pistol, two mags and all the carry gear to go along with them all stuck in the waistband of my trousers.

If you really feel that you need to carry the spare mags IWB, then two separate pouches is the way to go. But I believe the spare mags IWB are completely unnecessary, and that you would be much better served with the two pouches OWB.

Of the IWB mag pouch manufacturers, the version by Crossbreed looks most practical. I tried one made by another custom leather maker - for a Glock mag, and it was worthless. The Crossbreed looks stable. Also, if you're not wearing shorts, consider an ankle holder like some offer.

I definitely decided to go OWB for comfort sake. Like said earlier, don't want to be walking around with everything stuffed in my pants. Also going with the 2 Single pouches so I have the versatility to just carry one spare or 2. Most the time one spare should be sufficient, but atleast i would have the ability to carry 2 if desired.

I primarily carry a pistol IWB and have done so for years. The correct holster is important for comfort. That said, I find IWB magazine carriers uncomfortable and unnecessary. My OWB mag carriers extend less than a half an inch below my belt. They are covered just fine by any cover garment that works for IWB carry.

Safariland made a thin spring steel 1911 mag carrier for OWB. Check and see if they have something for your mags as well. Ivan
