J frame experts

Nice looking Baby Chiefs!
Welcome to the forum from Pennsylvania!
The front sight appears to be smooth on the top surface. Am I correct, or does it have serrations? If smooth, it is somewhat less common, and all the more reason not to alter it.... but, the serial number is a bit beyond where the smooth ramp sights seem to fall. Just curious!

Maybe this helps a little...

Yeah... I frame grips should work, or if you can find a set of J frame diamond grips, the bottoms would need to be filed or cut back maybe an eighth of an inch.....what you want are a set like the ones in the photo of my gun above.... (Post 11)... mine is a smooth ramp as well. Nice!!

Best Regards, Les

Mine has serrations on the front ramp and yes, I tried putting on a set of uncle Mike's boot grips I had and they extended past the frame at the bottom of the grip

Hope this works. Guess the grips i had were not for a j frame

Wow, that's a beauty, I wouldn't change it either. Look for a later 3" 'Chiefs'.

The grips you have are for both I and J frames, but not the Baby J frame. They are for the Models of 1953 I & J frames which have 1/8" longer grip frames.

You want pre Models of 1953 I or J frame grips, again they'er the same size.

As les.b posted the ones you have can be shortened, sanded to the original contours of the pieces you cut off and touched up with True Oil and will be exactly right for your gun.

There's huge overlapping of the use of all three front sights. The smooth ramp front sight:

#292X……earliest observed smooth ramp, shipped in February '52
#12630…..highest reported so far until now smooth ramp c. May 1952

#18XXX ...appears to be a new "high water" mark for smooth ramps if the barrel serial # matches the frame #.

See just like what les.b said!!!!!!

:D

My M36 is a 3", it carries just fine in a proper belt holster and please don't mess with your fine family heirloom revolver. Even if it's worn, it is worth much more in it's original configuration. You will thank us later. There are plenty of 3" chiefs both new and used. Changing and fitting barrels are not kitchen table jobs... and they are not drop in. Very often the barrel shoulder must be recut to provide the correct barrel / cylinder gap on a lathe.

Thanks everyone. The gun will stay as it is!

If you want a nice stainless carry revolver may I suggest the Model 60-9, last of the pre-locks and is a 357 Magnum, or you can shoot the 38 Special for range time and just for fun. Virtually identical to your Model 60 38, it's the Magnum J Frame but only slightly larger. I would suggest practicing with the round you intend to carry, point of impact will almost certainly change from 38 to 357.

IMHO my 60-9 is an almost perfect concealed carry gun.
