I posted a question like this in the middle of another thread, but it sort of got lost among the other discussions. So - just on this topic:
I like to shoot my J frames, a lot, but find them to be generally uncomfortable after not all that many rounds. Even with Pachmayr Decelerator grips, which are almost as large as a K frame grip. I'm thinking that a grip which is considerably wider near the top, where recoil comes back into the web between thumb and index finger, would be more comfortable for long range sessions.
I can shoot a Glock 26 all day with ammo that has a higher "power factor" (bullet wt in grains x velocity in fps) than the carry ammo in my J frame, and most of my J shooting is with even less powerful "cowboy" loads. The Glock weighs less than my Model 49 when both are fully loaded, though of course it does have that moving slide to absorb some of the recoil.
Anyway, my Glock measures 1.15" across the curve that fits in the web of my hand. My widest (at the top) J grips are actually Magnas, which measure 0.95 at their highest point, while the (much less comfortable to shoot) S&W boot grips come in at ~0.84. The Pachmayr Decelerators are even narrower (surprise) at 0.80, but their cushioned backstrap make 'em more comfortable to shoot a lot than either of the others. (BTW, even a grip that was as wide as a Glock grip would be narrower than the 1.3" diameter cylinder - I can conceal a G26, so presumably could conceal a J frame with a grip that was no wider than a Glock.)
Does anybody know of a J frame grip that is considerably wider at the top end than Magnas? I have a 442, the 49 and a 638, so anything that went as high on the backstrap as possible with those frame shapes would be a bonus. I've looked at a number of the grip picture threads, but can't reach any conclusions (most don't show a full on rear view.)
Thanks for any suggestions.
