J Frame Photos, Let's See Yours

Hondo,

That gun, Sir, is what is known as a "mystery on God's earth."
It's a 36-10, but the product code is not in the SCSW nor is it listed in any of the 36-10 variations.

Learned folks, to whom, I've shown it say things like, "HMMM," and "Interesting," and "That thing needs a letter!"

Best theory, since the box states "special order" is it's a foreign contract, or over run, or foreign police example in the vein of the HKPD model 10 or the GIGN model 586.

I know it's the only one I've ever seen and the powder residue on every other chamber suggests factory fired, only. Whatever it is, it is NIB, shipped circa 4th quarter 2000.

Attached is a pic of my one month old BG38 Bodyguard 38 Special snubbie.

Oh, wait... No pics for now, it is still at S&W being repaired after the action locked up!

Sorry, couldn't resist. :)

OK, got the replacement for the broken Bodyguard...

Here is the first range session.

Mike,

That most definitely is a mystery and awfully unique. So it's stamped 36-10 in the yoke? I agree that it's most likely an over run gun of some foriegn contract although none are documented in SCSW as you said. I seldom get my guns lettered but that one certainly deserves one or at least a call to Roy.

It's closest to the 36-6 Target run of 615 in 1989, prod code # 101549:

But with later features like the MIM hammer & thumbpiece, frame mounted firing pin, and cast-in cylinder lug & Master trigger lock like the Sept. 1996 36-9 J frame Magnum for the 357 although no magnums were made in blued guns. Does it have the longer cylinder 1.6" cylinder? Did it come with a fired case? How did you come up with "shipped circa 4th quarter 2000"?

One thought is that it was a limietd run to use up some 3" full lugged heavy barrels from the 1989 run left in inventory. But the lanyard ring and "Special Order" is typical of a foriegn contract gun.

I think it's worth a thread of its own to get more input on it. I'm sure someone on this forum must know more about it.

Hondo,

I haven't, yet, measured the cylinder length, though the barrel is roll marked "38 special."

The shipping date of 4th quarter 2000 is a SWAG pertaining to the "CEJ" portion on the SN (as per info from SCSW).

I have 325 in it from a "motivated" seller/co-worker, so, if I spring 50 bucks for Mr. Jenks signature, I reckon I'll still be in black ink.

It is also a close cousin to my 3" adj sight, full lug RB 60-4, finish and lanyard ring, not withstanding. No fired case or master lock are in the box, but the warranty card, another box label and other "ephemera" are all there.

I'm thinking relative rarity and high condition may be reasons to leave this 'un deeeep in the safe!

I reckon if I post a duplicate thread I may incur the wrath of our large simian benefactor!

Mike

Hondo,

Here's the open crane, showing the stamping:

Notice the lack of fouling in the window. All I have done is a quick Rem-Oil spray and wipe-down with a micro fiber cloth, which came-away clean. You can also detect the cylinder is ti-ti "plum-ish".

This is a great thread. I've got a M37 and three M60s... a no dash, -7 and -9. Just lookin at these J frames with the various grips, after market front sites and holsters gives me a headache... way too many options!

Mike,

I agree, that is a keeper to bury deep in the safe! I don't believe it was fired since the factory either! The cylinder does have a titanium like color. Does it feel light if you 'feel' the weight when lifting it to close?

I'm curious if it would chamber a 357 just for 'giggles'. I noticed it said "Includes Master lock" on the box label.

I believe it is so pristene, rare and unique that a new thread specifically seeking its 'pedigree' is certainly justified.

Definately an upgrade!!.. Glad to hear all is well! :)

Thanks!

I think I'll be much happier with a tried and true J-frame action instead of that other one they couldn't fix.

This new gun might even make it into the rotation with the Glocks!

There is NO gun like a good J-frame! ;) Everyone should own one!

My J's 36, 649 & 60

I only own the 60 now.
