OK, so while the 340PD is a great little lightweight gun, as we all know, they are not fun to shoot with full power 357 loads.

Thus the question…… Are there any semi soft finger groove grips out there for the J frame round butt revolver? I have the Hogue Monogrip which while rubber, they certainly are not semi soft. They are more along the lines of plastic like and so very little in the way of taming hot loads.

Thoughts?

I use a set of oversize Pachmyer grips for my 100 + round range visits but don’t shoot anything hotter than +P. Magnum rounds produce too much recoil for fast and accurate follow up shots, at least for me.

I like the combat Uncle Mike grip.

A three finger rubber grip.

Out of production for several years, but findable on eBay etc.

I have no problem with shooting +P, even with boot grips. But when you step up into magnum, like you said, the recoil is just not conducive to follow up shots. Hence the search. :p

I like Old Cop's suggestion of installing a Pachmayr Grip. Certainly, it will help with recoil mitigation and such. As for myself, I do own a 340PD, but have left it alone in its original configuration, albeit with the hogue boot grip. I have tried alternatives rounds through it, but I always default back to the Federal's C357B in .357 magnum. That is my carry load. I am good for two cylinder's worth in training, before relegating to my understudy. I also think the 340PD is meant to be carried a lot and shot very little. As for training, I have included the J framed 43C (.22 LR) as an understudy. Both the 340PD and 43C have the same identical grips and trigger pull, which has been quite helpful and beneficial. Any rate, this reply is just an alternative answer to your original question.

I had the full length Mikes on my J frame bedstand gun but I recently figured it does not need to be deep concealed in that application and got the larger Pachmayr finger groove J frame grips for it. Certainly more hand filling and rubber between your palm and the frame.

The Pacymyer (sp?) grips I use cover the back strap, have finger grooves & extend below the bottom of the grip.

Taurus small frame grips fit the J frame round butt. They are soft, cover the backstrap and boot length. I use them on several of my Air lite J frames. They take the sharpness out of the recoil. Can be bought reasonably on ebay.

Crimson Trace with the padded backstrap has always been my go to.

F you could post a pic, I would appreciate it. That way, I know what I am looking for. Or even a model number of the Taurus that will interchange.

Thanks

It’s funny how everyone that owns a 340PD hate shooting it with full house loads, and many just practice with .38

My objective is to at least be able to fire a box of Magnums when I take it to the range. That will give plenty of trigger time and allow me to be comfortable carrying it.

Interestingly, I can handle the recoil using the tiny boot grips better than the monogrip. I will have to look at the monogrip I have, thinking maybe it is the nylon version.

Hogue makes a finger groove Tamer model, but it appears not for the J frame. I really don’t understand how no one produces a fairly soft/cushioned grip for the 340PD. It would be so much nicer to shoot.

I have a Model 13 that is a pleasure to shoot, and knowing the 340PD will never get to the pleasant to shoot realm, it should at least be bearable.

I don't want a handgun

that is painful to practice with the ammo that I carry in it.

So for me the lightest J is a 442 or 642. I can fire .38 +P without great discomfort. Not 100 rounds mind you but enough to maintain adequate proficiency.

I want no parts of .357 in any J, even a steel framed gun.

Please see photo attached.
Model is 85 or 850. Description "Taurus small frame black rubber revolver grips" will get you there. Need to remove S&W pin or drill new pin hole in grips. Easy to do. I like the pebble finish. Not sure the ribbed fits.
P.S. Hogue makes a Tamer for the J frame Centennial, very good grip but it is longer.

Maybe these Hogues's aren't made anymore but they are very soft. I'm sure you could find them on eBay or someone here might have a set, besides me.

Just noticed a set on GB. I haven't used these grips but have original Guy Hogue two piece grips on my M49. Quite comfortable to shoot with +P FBI loads.

Found them on Ebay. They look pretty promising.

Either of you know if this is a different material than the Monogrip “rubber” grips for the J frame?

S&W J-Frame Round Butt: OverMolded Rubber Monogrip - Black

Also, are the Taurus revolvers round butt?

ETA: While searching Ebay, I found a number of the old “tamer” grips item #60020. Still produced, it says Centenial, but one of the ads shows model 642, so therfore should fit 340PD.

One photo shows material as “soft rubber”. Anyone have these and also have the #60000 Monogrip? If so, are the Tamer version softer rubber?

OP:

I don't know anything about the newer Hogue selections. The link you posted is one of the new style with what looks like a plastic insert on the bottom which is probably something to do with the attachment. Rest of it looks like rubber. Hogue mono's were originally either the "recoil absorbing" rubber or a hard nylon along with various woods. I can't say for certain that the J frame grips were available in nylon but I would assume so. The nylon and wood grips don't catch clothing.

Just took a look at your link again and maybe the plastic insert is to help prevent snagging of clothing and tracing of the gun.

I have the Hogue grips robertwhite linked, one set for each of all four of my j's. They are very comfortable for shooting heavier loads in the ones that will accept +P. I had a fifth, a 60-15 .357 that I sold to a co-worker before I retired. He wanted a small .357, and I sold it to him with the stock grips (pretty but useless) and my 5th set of Hogues. He tried both, and said the Hogues would stay on the gun. In the pic I posted in the j-frame pic thread, the only one that does not change from the pic is the mdl.38 with the DiSantis clip. It does reside IWB without a holster at times. Easiest to hide of anything I own. But at the range, the 38 gets it's set of Hogues, as well.

So you are saying that your co worker uses the rubber Monogrips with 357 magnum loads? I have tried several times and while working, they certainly don’t come anywhere near what would be comfortable and more certainly not any actual range time.

That is unless he has gorilla strong hands.:)

The rubber Tamer grips say soft rubber and I plan on calling Hogue to ask about the different materials.
