J-Frames with Longer than Standard Barrels...What Are They?

Hey all,

I like the J-frames and plan on getting one as my next handgun purchase. The ones I really like are ones like the 640 Pro. I love the looks of that J frame and it might be my mine.
I know there are several J frames that have longer than the usual 1 7/8 barrels. I'm not talking about custom stuff like a humpback with a 3 inch barrel that someone had S&W do for them.

I'd also like to see some pics of them so if you have them I'd appreciate you posting.

Here is my 642 Power Port. Yes it is a 642 though it is black. Has a special black finish over the stainless. Dovetail front sight and comp cut into the top of the front of the barrel. I replaced the big white dot front sight with a trijicon night sight. Overall length of barrel with comp is 2 1/8".

As I understand it SW did a run of 637s, 642s, 638s, and 442s with 2.5" barrels. Here are pics of the 637, 638 and 642 with 2.5" barrels. These are not mine. Though I am considering purchasing.

They all have pinned sights which means you can change them which is a nice feature. I wish the standard models had pinned sights as I would love to put night sights or fiber optics on all of mine.

This was a Airweight I had a few years ago with a 2.25 barrel. Nice gun but not good for pocket carry so I moved it.

I also know SW has made several runs over the years of model 36s with 3" barrels. Don't own one, grabbed the pic off the internets.

I found this 642 , 2 1/8 " ported at my LGS with box and all the goodies.
It was won at an NRA dinner and traded.
I paid a whooping $350 for it.
I wasn't looking for another J but it looked so lonely.

I have a Model 60 with a 3" barrel and adjustable sights, I will post a pic when I get home. S&W currently offers the M/63 22lr J frame with a 5" barrel. However, I prefer the original M/63 with the 4" barrel. I think it is a more balance look on a J frame than the 5".

The 4" barreled J Frames, 63 and 34 are great youth and women training pistols. The smaller size, and lighter weight make them easy to shoot. My granddaughters love shooting them. The .22RF has no recoil.



The Model 36 is a classic carry piece



The 32 Hand Ejector (Pre 30) is actually an Improved I Frame, but with the 3" barrel is a wonderful shooter.



The 940 makes 9mm available in a Classic carry format.



The 60-15 (Pro Series) makes .357 available in the J Frame.



A de-horned Mod 60 makes carry easier.



And the 3" Mod 36 with Adjustable sights is the best of both worlds.

2014 S&W catalog shows the Model 63 with a three inch barrel only.

I dunno, my 63 is my favorite .22 revolver that I own (and I own quite a few .22s!). Maybe it's the Fuzzy Farant grips, but that little gun is a tack driver, besides being a pleasure to shoot. And I have large hands, by the way.

The normal 640pro barrel is 2 1/8"

I think mine looks and balances perfect with the standard barrel.

You mean like this Model 60-18 5" barrel and adjustable sights in .357? I thought the lines were outstanding. It was a fun little gun, but traded it for a Combat Masterpiece circa 1956.

I've thought that I'd like to have a little more barrel on a carry gun to get past that 'short barrel' velocity thing. It's nice to see there is something out there.
