J2SE Runtime Environment.....

What exactly is this and what does it do to/for my computer. The main body of the program must have been in the "bundle" when I bought the computer because it is about 175 megs and I sure would remember downloading that at 26.4kbs dial-up.

Anyway, I just finished downloading and installing a fair size update to this program and my computer sure seems slower all of a sudden.

I don't like to have/keep unused programs on my computer. Stuff like MONEY, QUICKEN and others are just taking up space on my hard drive. Is this a program (JAVA) that I don't want or need? When I finished the download/installation something was mentioned about appearing along with the MSN Tool Bar............

Oh did I mention that I know absolutely nothing about comuters?

thanks in advance,
SC

You should be able to go to control panel and software (or programs) to do an uninstall of java. Many websites require java to display what ever they want to display. You might try an uninstall and then re-install it but don't do the toolbar (or startup with system startup). A "minimal" install will still allow you to see website content but, it won't be constantly running in the background.

You can also do a system restore (search windows help) and restore to before you did the update.

You can also delete money and quicken or other programs (trial ware) that your manufacturer put on your computer. Be very careful when deleting. Only delete when you know what you're deleting.

Advice I always give my users (I used to manage a network of 1500 users) is this: "When ever the computer asks: are you sure want to do ??????, be darned sure that you know what you're about to do!" There are some things that you can't undo and reinstalling windows and every other program you use isn't fun!

I think doing a system restore is what I'm going to do. Not sure how long ago my computer set a restore point, but usually it's about every 7 days or so. Might have to re-download some McAfee and other updates, but that's fine. I'm going fishing in a little while and they can download while I'm sitting in my boat, in the shade of a willow tree (bush) catching 12" channel cats and BS'ing with my brother.

Thanks again for the input.

The JRE is basically a platform to run programs over many types of operating system--Linux, MacOS, Windows, whatever. Anything written in Java can be run with the JRE on any OS, provided the JRE exists for that OS.

You don't really need it. Like afriqueart said, it's usually used to run certain web-based things in your internet browser (though sometimes there are non-web programs that are written specifically in Java that need it to run). That use was pretty common in the days before Flash, but now Flash has taken over (being much lighter-weight and more ubiquitous).
