Jeep owners--need some input-buying

I personally feel like you get just as good economy out of a bigger motor. Seems like every time I go small the lack of performance stands out more than the fuel economy ever does.

Bought my wife a 4 cylinder Toyota Solara and she hated driving it because it was underpowered. Of course she's a bit of a lead foot. I always opt for the bigger motor when i buy my trucks as well, and it's always been worth the extra money up front.

Do you go off road enough, or is the snow deep enough for a Jeep?
The smaller Jeeps are now FIAT, for what that's worth.

Whose wife is very happy with a Flat-4 Subaru and so am I, but we live in flat Florida.

Off road ? Where I live the main roads are like off road, snow, not much, just a couple feet at a time.

I see your "True Delta" and i Raise you a "Long Term Quality Index"

Jeep Cherokee Reliability - Dashboard Light

How We Figure Out The Score

I went a looked through the charts there for a couple vehicles and it seemed that there were other vehicles with less issues that were rated lower (for instance rav4). Maybe I looked too quickly.

The Cherokee is a nice looking vehicle but I just trust Toyota and some others more.

Best of luck and happy buying to the OP. I'm sure the vehicle will induce happiness regardless of what he is chosen!

I had one and loved it. I was getting to the point where I would see what it actually took to kill this car.

Fuel economy hits my wallet, performance doesn't. MPG and reliability for me trump anything else

Ken--have ya'll looked at a Wrangler Sahara? They are not like the Wrangers of old (and rough as a cob). They have all the modern comforts of most SUV's today but will still handle about anything.

Yes I have, but the wife is set on the cherokee, I won't be driving it. I'll be driving my old 99 G Cherokee . Its pushing 200,000 Mi. I don't travel much. If the new one is half as good as my old one I'll be happy

One other thought looking at the Jeep . If your set on a 4Cyl. I would go with a Honda C R V. Proven and you'll get an easy 250 k on it. Just a thought.

Ready for the wife to trade. Shes set on the 2017 Cherokee Trailhawk.
Anybody have experience with the 4 cyl. ? We do live in the Catskill Mountains.
We're older so not needing macho power anymore. She has a 2014 Chey Cruz right now.
Seems the V6 models are several thousand more, is it worth it ?
Personally I'd like the V6 but its not my vehicle.
My personal vehicle is a 18 yr. old Grand Cherokee.
Wife still works so she needs dependability .
I've got a 15 Trailhawk, trust me do not buy the 4 cylinder, the V6 barely has enough power to avoid shifting up and down hills but the 4 is anemic in the 4100lb Trailhawk. Make sure you drive one for more than the test loop too and can live with the sub-par 9spd transmission. I've made peace with it but it hunts for gears, won't shift 3-2 when slowing and going (it either stays in 3rd or slams into 1st), shifting to pass is slow unless you drive in Sport mode, and it almost never uses 9th gear even on the interstate downhill. Also if you ever plan on towing with it get the factory tow package, don't have the dealer install it. With the factory package you get the lower final gearing, extra cooler and 4500lb rating, dealer install is 2000lb rating. All in all, I've been happy with it but the platform definitely has some quirks you have to live with, if I had to do it again, I'd have probably bought the Grand Cherokee.

Drove an '89 YJ 6cyl. for 18yrs and loved it...

I was taught to drive defensively.Slam on the brakes and you have lost your steering capability. If it wasn't for the 6cyl I would've been in the backseat of a person in front of me who decided it was a good idea to slam on their brakes because they missed their turn.I was able to quickly downshift, punch the gas and slip in between two cars next to me and avoid an accident.Unfortunately I failed to slow down and didn't see the cop laying in wait just ahead. It was still cheaper than the alternative.

Maybe a 4cyl will work for some just like these electric cars but I'd rather not have the limited capabilities with the wide variety of driving I do.
