Jellyfish

Last night I watched a show on Animal Planet called "Rise of the Jellyfish". This may have been the scariest thing I have ever seen about the future of our planet. When will man realize he can't treat the ocean as a sewer and dump ground. But it's not just salt water either, they are finding them everywhere. Kudzu, fire ants, Asian carp and now jellyfish. Dang, we can be morons.

It will forever be an offshoot of international commerce. Ships enter the Great Lakes and dump their ballast water, which may contain organisms harmful to that ecosystem and fishery. Wooden shipping crates built in Asia bring insects that may devastate our local tree species. And then there are the "natural" types that want to combat a problem by introducing a naturally antagonistic species....a disaster EVERY time. Heaven help us and save us from our ignorance!

We're not too worried about jellyfish around here, and it's just as well, since we already have plenty of noxious and dangerous critters to worry about --- 13 varieties of rattlesnakes, scorpions, Black Widow and Brown Recluse spiders, Gila Monsters, rabid small mammals, Tarantula Hawk wasps, Africanized honeybees, toxic toads, and that's not to mention the abundance of Green-Meany plants.

I'm not sure which was worse, the time I backed into a barrel cactus, or the time I got tangled up in a Portuguese Man-O-War.
