My close friend Richard Varner who is on this forum turned 99 on August 17th. He is a WW11 Vet and an amazing man for his age. He cuts wood, changes his oil, Mows his field, plows snow etc and remembers what he paid for a gun in 1960! He sold his last Harley when he was 91.
I wanted to do something special for him for his birthday so I contacted Jennifer Culina about a set of custom grips for Dick. Unfortunately, I didn't think of this project in time to get them for his birthday.
Jennifer was just amazing. She worked with me on wood selection, sending me multiple pics in emails. We also had 3-4 phone conversations along the way. She sent me updates and a pic of the grips when finished. She sent shipping and tracking info as well.
I had told her about Dick, the fact that he was a WW11 Vet and that he was turning 99. She sent the grips gift wrapped with a card wishing him a happy birthday and telling him that the Culina's were proud to have been part of this project. The customer service was probably the best I have ever encountered from any company! She is just an outstanding person to deal with. Thankyou Jennifer.

I ordered my first set of their grips back when they still checkered them. They went on a model 19 I was giving to my son-in-law when he retried from the Army. A few years later I got my grail gun, a 31/2 inch model 27. I called Jennifer and asked about grips for it. She immediately referenced those model 19 grips they had made several years prior as we discussed the grips for the model 27. In addition to being sweet and helpful, Jennifer apparently keeps excellent records of past sales. They are truly wonderful people.

They got in some interesting wood I liked. We spoke how I would like to see the faint lines running through one set in, and he made them astounding to my liking. I keep those wrapped in green emerald cloth. The other set is astounding. When he called to let me know they were being shipped, I just couldn't wait. John asked me on the phone," Bud, have you ever made anything you really hated to sell?" I told him, yes Sir: I have.

Got lost going through a small box of his grips just now. They are all awesome. They have the gifts that make it all work out, and I'm proud to own some of their work.

Great thing you had done for your friend.

I've had an opportunity to speak with John and Jennifer both and have doing business with them for years. I'm not sure but I think I have one of the first round to square butt conversions John sold. I had a 629 Mountain Revolver in a very low serial number, first run. I did not like the way it recoiled with that light 3" barrel and full on magnum bear loads, I had it quadra ported which helped but then thought to myself. I can shoot my Model 29s with no issues probably because they have square butts and target stocks. I contacted John and asked him if he could do that conversion, it was well before he advertised it. He said he could and mentioned that he had a piece of Honey Bastogne Walnut that would be just the ticket, nuff said I order them up and was happy to receive them and when I tried them they provided just what I was after. I traded off the Mountain Revolver but those stocks are now on one of my favorite carry pieces, a Model 24-3 Lew Horton Special. Ive ordered other woods and mostly target stocks from the Culinas. Last pair I ordered I talked to Jennifer, she sold me on a pair of American Holley Magnas for my cut down Model of 1917. She practically held my hand as I hemmed and hawwed, eventually convicing me everything would be alright. Bless her heart, the two of them are the real deal.
