I'm recently retired and looking for a part time gig to keep mind and body active. I have an interview coming up this week and I'm not sure I want to divulge my interest in the shooting sports if it were to come up. Mind you, I'm not ashamed of it by any stretch but given the anti stance taken by many, I'm afraid it might affect my chances of employment. What would you say if asked about outside interests/hobbies?

After retiring from my construction union, decided I wanted to go back to work at a different field for a few years till my wife retired.

Had a CDL and wanted a driving job, but at age 55, many outfits thought I was a bit old for their companies.

I them made it a point to be completely open and answer most any question they could come up with. Told them up front make sure I'm who you want/ need I would not get upset or make a legal issue.

I told them how much I weighed (big boy) and as I heard Rush Limbaugh( on in the back ground I mention Oh we use the same radio station, that I was bondable if needed never arrested.

The vice president told me there was heavy stuff to move/load/unload and was I up to it. Told him I was probably the strongest person in the building and would be willing to prove it.

I figured at this time in my life being totally honest was the best, even told him that if hired in 4 months I was going to a 4 day car show in another state and would be taking that time off.

Got the job and it was a rather good job(very good employer) for 3 1/2 years till I quit and moved out of the area!

Leave it out. It not only has nothing to do with the job, it's none of their business, and the fewer people who know anything about you (including firearms), the better your personal security. That's putting aside the ninnies who will get their bloomers in a bunch because you're a gun owner.

Probably wise to mention some other hobbies instead unless you know the people pretty well and know that they may share an interest in shooting.

If your future employer asks you - answer truthfully. The truth shall set you free! Sorry, just couldn't resist. :)

If asked if you attend gun show's, reply affirmative, you are hooked on the buffalo jerky..;)
Who isn't ?:)

Do future employer's really ask those questions?

I was not asked anything about guns/hunting or hobbies in general.

As mention in my previous posit told them up front I was going to a 4 day car show a few months down the line. They did ask me what I had and I told them, heck it was no secret I would be parking in their lot during the better weather times.

As an employer I don't like surprises from (about) my new hires. However, I don't think your "hobbies" are a big deal.

I'd say leave it up to how the interview goes. If at some point you want or need to bring it up, go for it. If not, don't sweat it. Just be honest if specifically asked.

Good luck!

Only such question I was ever asked was: "Did I play golf"? Unfortunately, I did not. :o Not since high school anyway. :( Turns out it was a very important thing for this company's client relations. Crazy fools hired me anyway. :p

I would not mention the shooting sports, especially given that I live in loony, moonbatty Massachusetts. One of my last bosses before my forced early retirement was a rabid liberal anti-gunner. He knew that a few of us in his group were shooters & collectors, but it wasn't something he ever threatened to fire us over (although it may have been a factor re: my forced early retirement).

Just tell them that your hero is James Yeager, and that if you don't get the job you will "start killing people".

Then again, maybe not... :)
