Sad ending to a remarkable man. The moment the whole Sandusky thing blew up, I said to my wife that 'this will kill him, he'll be dead within a year.'

I don't know all the ins and outs of the scandal, but it does appear that he could have done more to push the issue. Of course, we were not in his shoes to know the real story, and dynamic. I always admired Paterno for his commitment to his family, players, and university. He made it a point to ensure his college athletes were also college students/graduates, and this is very rare these days. Seemed like an honorable person, that had a bitterly ironic ending to his life. RIP.

It apears the reports of JOPa's death are false...the person that "realeased" the info (the editor of PSU's student newspaper) was totally wrong and resigned from his position on the paper.

Nope , all major news outlets are confirming it. He's gone.

Not a Penn State fan,but I always admired the man. Have to admit that some of that was lost in the Sandusky debacle. Nevertheless,he was an icon and will remain so to the "true believers". RIP.
f.t.

God speed Joe! He shunned the spotlight and the notariety, he was embarassed about it. He was a humble and philanthropic gentleman/familyman and a great coach and role model to his players. RIP.

^^ Turn the TV on.

Sorry if I goofed up, but here's the link that I posted from...
Possibly JoPa did pass away and the news service hasn't updated thier site :o
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — The managing editor of a student-run news organization that covers Penn State resigned Saturday after the publication's Twitter account sent messages saying former coach Joe Paterno had died, according to a letter on the publication's website.
Paterno's sons refuted accounts of their 85-year-old father's death in Twitter messages posted after those by Onward State.
"I appreciate the support & prayers. Joe is continuing to fight," Jay Paterno tweeted.
Paterno has lung cancer and has been in a hospital since Jan. 13. His doctors say recent complications have made his condition "serious."
Onward State recanted its posts but not before the erroneous information was reported and amplified by many media organizations across the country and retweeted countless times. The Associated Press did not publish the report.
Devon Edwards said in the letter that he takes responsibility for the misinformation. He said the publication retracted its tweets after "the mountain of evidence stacked opposite that report became too much to ignore." He also apologized to the Paterno family and the Penn State community.
"I never, in a million years, would have thought that Onward State might be cited by the national media," his letter said. "Today, I sincerely wish it never had been."
The incorrect information found its way onto media websites, including CBSSports.com, People.com and the Huffington Post.
CBSSports.com had run a photo of Paterno with a caption saying the longtime Penn State coach "loses his battle with lung cancer at 85." The blurb did not include the source of the information.
In an apology on its site, CBSSports.com said the mistake "was the result of a failure to verify the original report. CBSSports.com holds itself to high journalistic standards, and in this circumstance tonight, we fell well short of those expectations."
Last January, several media organizations erroneously reported that U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords had died after being shot in the head during a public event in Arizona.
Edwards did not explain in his letter how the error occurred but hinted that the pressure to get the story first may have been a factor.
"In this day and age, getting it first often conflicts with getting it right, but our intention was never to fall into that chasm," the letter said. "All I can do now is promise that in t
he future, we will exercise caution, restraint, and humility."

The news report you cited was accurate last night, as their was a premature report of his death. But, he did pass today, so that story is now old news. Hard to keep up with stuff sometimes...

IMO, the Penn State Board of Regents were (and are) gutless to have fired him after he announced he was retiring this year...

my prayers go out to his family...

"All that is needed for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing"--Edmund Burke--

I have always been an admirer from afar, but it seems as more comes out about Penn States program not just the child abuse affair, maybe Joe and Penn State did not deserve quite as much adulation. We are all imperfect.

I was always taught if you can't say something good about somebody, don't say anything at all.

I guess some of you have a higher moral, ethical and legal
insight and are obviously free of human frailty and error.

He let children CONTINUE to be abused by his silence. I think he is getting a 'warm' reception down in his new home.

I have many failings and many faults---but no one will ever accuse me of turning a blind eye and a deaf ear to a child being abused.

EXACTLY! "Human frailty and error" would include sleeping late on occasions, eating TWO deserts, or having a few beers, not ALLOWING, by his lack of actions, children to be molested so he can protect his job, and reputation.
Joe shares 100% of the guilt.

I'm from PA and I never liked the school, the team, or the head coach. He was as guilty as sin in the child molestation case and he took alot of information to his grave with him. God may forgive him but........!

IMO, the Penn State Board of Regents were (and are) gutless to have fired him after he announced he was retiring this year...

I'm sure they did so for legal reasons, as a measure of protection for the university, not out of concern for the children.

Good riddance, you ***. Here's to hoping your precious football program dies with you.

The man died today and you'll piss on his corpse with no conclusive adjudicated evidence. Bravo! Just Proved Yourselves!!!!

This just needed repeating one more time...

And a 3rd, 4th, and 5th time...that is the kind life philosophy that all too many of those in power overlook today. And probably since the dawn of man.

But daaang you guys really feel that much hatred for the man even now that he has just died?? I also have not gone very far into the information that has come out since the beginning of this scandal...but still as far as i know this man has done a lot of good for countless numbers of college athletes, and been one of the few who have pushed in a direction that brings respect to college athletics and not gone the factory route.

Of course if he actually knew and was sure about child molestation going on then i guess i can understand your views...did he though?? Repeat: i am have know detailed knowledge of what came out in the investigation.

But i have a hard time believing he actually felt in his heart and mind that he was willing to let that go on just to help his fball program. I am confused about why sandusky was allowed to stay on that long even it was just repeated speculation... Still, RIP Joe Paterno. Our judgement is meaningless anyways in the end.

My understanding is Joe Pa passed the information supplied to him by the graduate-assistant up his chain of command. He also passed along his concern and stated he didn't know how to handle this situation himself.

From the evidence that has come out so far, Joe Pa did not witness any of this himself. He was head coach not the Univ President, or the Athletic Director. Use of University property wasn't his to give or deny, not his job. And he also wasn't guilty of "doing nothing", he did do something, he followed his chain of command.

As this investigation continues, more evidence may come to light, but in my mind we lost a great man today.

RIP
