Joey Logano wins THE 500

Don't really know NASCAR but the orange and yellow with the Shell and Pennzoil caught my eye at the start. I said to the wife check out the old school paint and sponsor, I got something to track back to on the tube this afternoon.

Go figure.
Only took me about 4 laps to figure out the name and number.

Joey is a very talented driver and being so young will probably have a great career. Mark Martin recognized his talents and brought him into stock car racing. A bit of nostalgia in seeing Jeff Gordon run his last Daytona. I remember his first. Dale Earnhart called him "the kid" and now he's one of the good ol' boys. Good race today!

I just got into the slot car racing and I'm interested in the new monogram and revell nascars. I have some with the porsches. But my next buys will be the 1/32 scale nascar slot cars. I'm thinking of a 4' x 8' slot car layout but maybe bigger with 4 lanes.

hey - remember when slot car racing was the big rage? Late'60s I guess. Wow - that's almost 50 years ago. Now I'm wishing I hadn't remembered it. Anyway - there were BIG slot car racing tracks scattered around where you paid to run your cars. It wasn't expensive but the cars could run into money. I had a super hot motor and perfect gear set and I put it all under a really ugly VW body. I used to have lots of fun going to a neighborhood track and beating the socks off of guys with gorgeous cars that obviously cost a lot. My cars and accessories and so on got sold in a yard sale sometime in the '70s, but I still have a trophy on a bookshelf that I won one night in a hotly contested race with that little VW.

Don't be too sure this is Jeff Gordons' last 500. He said he was retiring as a regular driver but left the door open on participating in a limited number of races.

Well it won't be in the 24 car as I believe someone else is being considered for that seat.

"Gordon doesn't want car number 24 retired: Jeff Gordon knows some of his fans would rather not see the #24 on the car of another Sprint Cup driver. But he believes Chase Elliott will have so much success, his fans eventually will change their minds. So he convinced team owner Rick Hendrick that Elliott, who will replace the four-time Cup champion starting in 2016, should drive a Hendrick car with the #24 on the side. "Rick wanted to retire that number for maybe one year or a certain period of time - you never know what NASCAR allows," said Gordon, who will retire from full-time racing after the 2015 season. "He definitely threw that idea out to me, and I said, 'No.' I love the #24. I want to see the 24 go on to do great things. I did say if Chase was really adamant or (his dad) Bill and Chase and (his mom) Cindy all felt like that another number was more suited, that I was open to it. But I think our fans want to see the 24 continue on with the right person and be successful with the right guy, and he's the right guy."

Jr. blew the race when he got himself caught in the middle alone. Otherwise, it would have had a completely different outcome.

What makes a race interesting? I do not get it. I won four sponsor box tickets to the Indi 500 and sold them. Different people like different things, but what things do race fans like about racing? Thanks, Rick

I thought it was one of the worst Daytona's, I've ever seen. The current aero rules allowed no passing and the "drafting" was the weirdest I've ever seen since I started watching the race in 1971! Typical Nascrap follow the leader pack racing on a restrictor place track. Didn't even have a decent "big one".

There was a race today?!?!

I tried hard to be a good fan till Dale Sr passed, but between being pissed at Gordon (the kid does ooze talent, but he bugs me for some reason) and losing the only driver I really cared for, I could take it or leave it anymore... The "car of tomorrow" **** totally killed it for me, although all the brands were den near identical anyways, It was nice for a company to be able to get an advantage here or there..... I will still watch it occasionally, but not much.... Would much rather watch top fuel bikes (in person WOOHOO).

I'm a bigtime car guy, but I don't follow any racing. It's a big yawner for me.

well - to each his own. Some people get into stick and ball games and some into yachting and some into boxing - I get into racing. Some of my earliest memories of times with my Dad was listening to the Indy 500 on the radio. He had a good friend who worked as a pit crew member for Billy Vukovich in the '50s and I loved listening to his stories. I don't get into football or baseball but I think being a racing fan is a lot like those in that fans learn the players and follow them and their teams through the season. They become like "real people" - some that we like and some that we don't. We learn about their families and their team members and follow their victories and their disappointments. And it helps to be somewhat of a car nut too - and appreciate the mechanical and technical aspects of the sport. Don't know if that explains being a racing fan, but it's some of what I feel.

I love racing of all kinds. When watching a NASCAR event, I try to imagine that the leader has a trunk full of shine and everyone behind him / her are the cops :D !

For me being a car guy it's the mechanics of it all. Getting a car to go fast in a straight line is relatively easy, it's getting to go fast around a corner that makes it interesting. I watch NASCAR simply because it's nose to tail and door to door all day.
Today's 500 was awesome. 2 and 3 wide the whole race with very little crashing and very few yellows makes for a great show, and seeing my Fords clean house all weekend was good also!

P.S. Open wheel cars (Indy, F1) do nothing for me, they can't run close because of the massive areo needs. Makes for boring racing.

Re the PS... them boys can drive. Not a fan or an expert but anyone that can handle 4 wheels a heartbeat from going airborne is OK by me... kind of like the difference between a johnboat and a hydroplane.

Any racers out there that run it all like Foyt and Yarborough used too?

I had no idea horse racing started already, must have been in warmer weather. I never heard of the horse Joey Logano but his jockey had a nice yellow jersey.

Was really disappointed in this year's 500. A single guy in clean air that the field can't catch? I thought that was the 1.5-mile cookie-cutter tracks, not the superspeedways. They need to fix the aero package bigtime before July.

Also, I am still kinda smarting from the awful changes to the championship format. I was never a fan of the Chase, but it made a lot more sense than this stupid winner-takes-all format. I mean, two of the four guys racing for the trophy had awful mediocre seasons and they nearly were a champion.

Lately, the number of interesting races every year can be counted on one hand. There is very little passing, track position made up in the pits is everything, two-tires can run with four-tires for dozens of laps. They have lost a lot of appeal, and you could see it Sunday: They tore down the backstretch stands -- half of the upper grandstands are under construction... AND THEY STILL COULDN'T SELL OUT THE DAYTONA 500! If that doesn't send a message to the front office, nothing will.

Okay, NASCAR rant over. Congrats to Logano, he is really a whole different driver at Penske.

I agree. I am a car guy as well as a race guy. I am also a revolver guy.

I like watching cars race in the most important American race: The Daytona 500.

As the gentleman that you are, I'd ask that you don't flame Nascar racing in a thread that someone else started. We share common hobbies except for Nascar. I get it.

I really liked the story behind the 2015 Daytona Champion. His Dad and Mom sacrificed a lot to help their son with his career. They even moved from CT to Charlotte. He won Daytona and the $1,500.000 check. His car has to be placed in the museum for a year.

Mom and Dad will never forget this wonderful weekend.

Is that check amount a misprint or for real? Did you miss a coma and a few zeroes? If real, it's hardly worth risking life and limb for!
