John Wayne Birthplace Museum In Winterset Iowa

Last month I traveled back to my beloved home town and state of Perry Iowa to visit family. While there we took a short trip to Winterset which is the birthplace of Marion Michael Morrison (born Marion Robert Morrison), known professionally as John Wayne and nicknamed Duke. There are probably few, if any, members of this Forum that need me to expound further on this icon. I will just say that there is a fairly new and interesting John Wayne Birthplace Museum in Winterset, and if you are in the central Iowa area and have a few free hours you might want to pay it a visit. As I recall standard adult admission was $15. Below are a few pictures I took while there, however there is much more to see than my few pictures represent. Click on the photos for a closer look. There should be a sign over the entrance that reads: "Welcome, Pilgrim." When you leave, there should be a sign that reads: "You Should Do What You Thinks Best."

That Grand Safari is nice. It seems fitting that John Wayne was a Pontiac man. More luxurious than a Chevy or a Ford, and not as stodgy as a Caddy or Lincoln. Plus, those old Ponchos had a bit of a western theme to them.

Read a story of someone who rode with him.

Not only was Wayne a bit lead-footed but he had
a habit of coming up at stoplights and slamming
on the brakes at the last moment.

I think I also read that GM provided him with a new
Pontiac each year. Supposedly the raised roof
section was not only to accommodate his size but
to allow him to wear a tall crowned cowboy hat.
