John Wayne’s “The Shootist” film locations

A lot has been written & said about the casting for "the Shootist" as apparently some A List actors were reluctant. It was said Jimmy Stewart only agreed to his role as a favor to Wayne and John was not sure he would make it thru the movie's shooting but was determined to do so. John was my friend and we played poker and hunted together 50 some yrs ago now and my wife was his favorite nurse for the many times he visited Scripps Clinic in La Jolla, CA. for cancer treatments. There is a great website called A Word on Westerns hosted by Rob Word.

He has done interviews with the actors, actresses and stuntmen from most of the old westerns including TV series.

An example of movie trivia, from the site, talks about The Shootist filming.

After JW shoots the robber he tells the producer, Don Siegel, that Ford would not have done the take like that.

Then they packed up and left the scene. However the actor who was shot was forgotten and was still in the river.

JW realized that they had left him behind and went back to get him. JW felt so bad he compensated him out of pocket.

Check out the website for more trivia about westerns on the set and behind the scenes.

The Shootist was one of the Duke’s best, but unfortunately his last.

I've never understood the high regard so many hold for The Shootist. To me it always plays like one of those 2nd rate '70s made for TV movie. The camera work and editing is poor, the dialog is trite and pretentious, and most of the actors are just walking through their roles.

If looked at critically and not as John Wayne's last movie and a fitting farewell, I don't think it would be considered one of his better films.

IMO, some of the Duke's best work was in Red River, The Searchers, and They Were Expendable.

Best regards,
