Junkyarding

Hello all,
If any of you make an occasional trip to the junkyard for the odd car part, please be on the look out for Pontiac 6000 STE's. If anyone see's one or knows where one is at, please drop me a PM here. A name and phone number is needed.

Specifically, a 1984-88 non all wheel drive STE car with rear disc brakes is what I'm looking for. Long shot, I know, but I'm getting nowhere fast so far.

If this should be in the Wanted section instead of here, consider me a dunce.

Don't you have a junkyard with a teletype? I know that's an old fashioned device, but its what they called it. You just have them put up what you're seeking and junkyards all over respond to your questions.

That's what I meant by getting nowhere fast. Because of the age, a lot of yards won't bother to respond even if they have one. Carparts.com gives lists of yards that have a particular part category, but isn't specific enough. The yards never answer the online request for something specific. Been trying for a year nearly. I think this will take the eyeball method: someone actually seeing one. Hope this route works.

Junkyard

I have occasion to visit junkyards regularly,what specific parts are you looking for? I also have a friend who has a lot of NOS Pontiac parts, his father was a small town Pontiac dealer and he had a reluctance to send back unsold parts.

Specifically, the rear disc brakes from an 84-86 STE, non AWD. I need the backing plates, caliper brackets, hard lines to the calipers, calipers, parking brake cables from the adjuster back, and the hardware (caliper pins/bolts, clips, etc). Backing plates and caliper brackets are hardest to find.

This is for another car to correct a rear lock up problem GM cars had for awhile. Any leads helpful.

Have you tried RockAuto.com they seem to have a lot of parts. I have dealt with them they seem to be OK

I use Rock Auto pretty often. They have mostly the "consumable" parts; pads, rotors, hoses, etc. The stuff I need the most are the backing plates, caliper brackets, and hardware type stuff. That's going to be extreme luck for a NOS find or a junkyard. Local yards have bunches of Ciera's, Century's, and Celebrity's (Olds, Buick, and Chevy versions of the 6000). The Pontiac's are scarce.

I could look around, my sister's 6000 ended up in one of the junk yards locally, it might still be there.

Check out car-part.com (make sure to include the dash, it differentiates it from carpart.com) search by year then model then look under axle beam Several yards have listings in the year range you are seeking, you may have to buy the whole assembly, but the prices seem cheap enough if the parts you need are included.

To DL: Thanks! It would have to have been an STE. It was the only one with rear disc brakes.

Without endorsing for or against, I know a couple of guys who have put a wanted ad on craigslist for auto related stuff. Its pretty easy to put one or more in for a region or even a state. You should only have them call to reduce spam, but even tho you will get a bunch of dead leads all you need are one or two for it to work out. Good luck, Bill S
