Someone will be around to give you a more accurate age. Pretty sure they stopped putting diamond magnas on them in 1968 though, so could be a 1969 or 1970 based on others I've seen dated in the same serial range.

Hope I'm right :)

Just inherited a S&W 31-1 with pinned barrel Serial # 82022X... Age? Value? I like it looks almost new except a little wear on ejector rod...

Excellent example of a fine caliber revolver.

Estimate very late 1968 or early 1969 production . . . 820xxx is a very high serial number before they adopted the letter H s/n prefix sometime during 1969.

Not sure about current value but 32 Long seems to be gaining in popularity . . . a year ago I would have expected to see it priced in the $450 to $500 range.

Hope you enjoy it as much as I do mine,

Russ

31-1 value

$550 and up with the 3" more and 2" version more still. Don't see many 30's or 31's at gun shows. Just loads of plastic hand guns and AR's that owners probably paid too much for. .223 is a NoNO for big game in WA.

I gladly paid $475 for a 4" m31-1 in excellent condition last August at a local gun show. Mine is SN H283xx which makes it 1969 to 1970. Yours is one of the last J frames with number only serial number that makes it a 1969.
Mild recoil and low report make it fun to shoot. Family history makes it even better!

If you're so inclined you can also have those chambers reamed to take 32 H&R Magnum and, with Buffalo Bore 100g ammo, have a potent defensive tool. (Muzzle energy exceeds that of Remington's 158g lead HP +P 38 Special round, the proverbial "FBI Load." BB has advised me that their 32 H&R round is safe for "unlimited use" in a reamed 30 or 31.)

And you can still shoot those fun, low recoil and highly accurate 32 Long rounds when you want to.
