I bought my first bow, a Bear Kodak Magnum recurve, in 1964. A flock of wooden arrows accompanied it with large, heavy steel, three bladed broad heads glued on to the wooden shafts. And believe it or not, my camo was a twinner to the one Fred wears in that photo—probably because it was the only pattern available.

I practiced stalking and shooting small by hunting New England woodchucks in cow pastures in the off season. The farmers appreciated it and asked me to leave a 'chuck tail on the fence for each one I got. Many dozens.

I got my first deer with that bow, by myself (no adult help/supervision) when I was 15. My instruction came from the hunting/shooting magazines of the day, to which Fred Bear often contributed. He was a Jedi Master of the time to me.

If that is the Grizzly that is in the museum in Florida then it might have been a world record Brown Bear from Kodiak Island Ak. They have the bear in the same pose as with Fred, but they have a platform you can stand on so the bear appears to be grabbing you. This is one big bear ! I am 6' tall and weigh 265 and that bear dwarfed me. Fred realized that the press from his hunting exploits was invaluable in advancing the sport and thereby increasing his market. He did many press tours showing the files of his exploits. He was a multi talented entrenpreneur.

On one of my fathers trips up North with a friend to go after moose, in the 60's...............

Fred Bear was in the same camp, going bow hunting for Caribou.
He stuck one but it got away in the timber but they found it the next day.

My fathers partner, Doug, took one of Fred's arrows, broke it in half, spit on it and tossed it on Bear's bed.
He told my father, that he saw that on tv. :eek:

As a note;
they cut the moose up with chain saws at that camp !!

I've not heard of that before.....is it similar to "cutting off one's shirttail" when they miss a shot at deer, etc...?
