I'm somewhat new to revolvers and recently purchased this Airweight for my CC. I notice a slight narrowing at the chamber throat when I push a patch through which I understand is normal. But I also see what looks like some kind of insert right at the throat.

Hopefully the images post properly. There is a "knurled" section and then a different type of material from the knurling to the chamber exit.

Like I said...I'm just curious about why this exists...or if it doesn't really exist then I need to clean the chamber a whole lot better...:D

i think what you are seeing is erosion from the shell being fired, it is common in all revolers.

Definitely not normal erosion. Those are chatter marks. The chamber shoulder was either cut with a dull reamer or not fully finished. You will get a totally unacceptable amount of fouling.

If the gun is new, it's due for a trip back to S&W.

 really? Yes, its just a few months old - 200 to 300 rounds max through it.
